BESSEMER -- A Kimball, Wis., man remains in the Gogebic County Jail on a $25,000 bond set Monday in Gogebic County District Court on a capital offense of kidnapping.
A Jan. 5 district court preliminary hearing is scheduled for Gregory Rantanen, 47, who faces a felony kidnapping charge after allegedly forcing a 27-year-old Ironwood woman into his truck in downtown Ironwood last Thursday.
Rantanan also faces a felony firearms charge in Gogebic County, according to prosecuting attorney Richard Adams.
Rantanen was arrested at a Hurley motel less than two hours after the alleged kidnapping incident on Thursday.
Iron County charges stemming from the Thursday incident have not yet been filed, according to court officials.
Rantanen could be charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and bail jumping, Iron County District Attorney Marty Lipske said Tuesday.
The Hurley Police Department obtained a search warrant for Rantanen's vehicle on Friday.
Rantanen earlier was scheduled for a plea and sentencing hearing in Iron County Circuit Court today on earlier convictions of misdemeanor domestic abuse/battery and felon in possession of a firearm, court officials said.
That hearing was adjourned on Monday when Rantanen waived extradition in Iron County Court to face the kidnapping and firearm charges in Gogebic County.
On Tuesday, Lipske said the plea was off the table.
Rantanen's plea and sentencing in Iron County stems from a May 3, 2006, incident in Hurley.
The current kidnapping charge against Rantanen followed the abduction of an Ironwood woman as she walked through an alley in Ironwood at 5:04 p.m. Thursday.
