On Tuesday, Morzenti responded to questions that have arisen about cooperation between the two cities prior to the April 1 election.
Two candidates for Hurley offices have suggested the city should cooperate more with Montreal, while a third has suggested another summer of well tests be conducted at the K-12 school site.
Mayoral candidate Paul Mullard said, "I do not feel we should continue with the well project until we have a meeting with Montreal. I believe the two cities can work together on this water system."
Mullard cites an August 2006 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources letter that said, "It is strongly recommended that the City of Hurley continue discussions with the City of Montreal regarding a shared water system."
But Hurley street superintendent Dave Levra said Wednesday Hurley is purchasing water from Montreal now and has done so for the past three years. "We have a contract with Montreal right now," he said.
Levra noted Montreal's wellfield is actually on City of Hurley property and is used through a lease agreement.
