ONTONAGON -- The village of Ontonagon got a nearly $100,000 surprise on Monday.
Treasurer Joan Nygard reported receiving a call from Ontonagon Township Clerk Bill Chabot about a check from Smurfit Stone Container to the Ontonagon Downtown Development Authority for 2008 personal property taxes of $97,540.80 along with another $285.92 for village roads.
"It was really unexpected and very welcome," Nygard said.
