IRONWOOD -- As the Ironwood City Commission considers whether to allow all-terrain vehicle use in the proposed Miners Memorial Heritage Park in the Caves area, it was pointed out Monday the use of ATVs was approved a year ago.
Ironwood resident Greg Pisani reminded city commissioners a resolution had been adopted on Aug. 10 to allow ATV use in the Caves area.
The vote was to continue ATV use on unmarked trails in that area. The trails had previously been used without formal permission from the city.
After Pisani reminded the present commission of the 3-2 vote of a year ago to allow ATV use, Mayor Bob Burchell said the resolution "had been made in haste." He said the resolution didn't take into account how the ATV riders would get to the trails and it didn't address trail signage in the Caves.
Current commissioners Burchell and Gemma Lamb voted against the motion, while Tom Laabs, Suzanne Toth and then-Mayor Bruce Noren supported it. Laabs, Toth and Noren are no longer on the commission.
