Winter to spring: 'not so fast'

This is no early April Fools' joke.

Seven to 13 inches of heavy, wet snow is expected to fall on the Ironwood area this afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Range. The snow is expected to be the worst today into tonight, said David Pearson, a meteorologist with the weather service in Negaunee Township.

Snow should wind down Tuesday, spring election day in Wisconsin.

A lower pressure system in the Texas panhandle will strengthen as it moves to northern lower Michigan. Gulf of Mexico moisture and low temperatures will combine to create the snow. The system's path puts the Range in the bullseye.

"It's ideal," Pearson said.

The timing may not be so ideal for those who enjoyed the weekend weather. It hit 46 degrees Sunday with a strong south wind and clear skies, Pearson said. Walkers and bikers hit the streets.

"It's not going to last," he said.

Heavy snow this time of year is nothing new here.

On April 3-5 last year, 24.8 inches fell in Ironwood, wreaking havoc on travel and spring sport practices.

Driving will be difficult and removing the heavy snow will be a chore, Pearson said.

"It's not entirely common, but it's not uncommon," he said. "We're due too. It's been awhile since we had a big storm."
