HURLEY -- The Silver Street bridge mural painting project has offered an opportunity for Hurley high school and elementary students to work together to improve the community.
High school art students began the project last week, first painting a logging scene on the wall on one side of the bridge and then a mining scene on the opposite side.
Second graders who visited the Iron County Museum in Hurley developed the themes for the painting project, said second grade teacher Michelle Santini.
Santini, along with teacher Patti Bertagnoli, approached the Hurley City Council about the project and received input from the city and assistance from city workers.
The service learning project for the students continued this week on Wednesday, when elementary students had their silhouettes painted on the murals.
The shadows of the students were traced on the walls of the bridge, with their figures viewing the mining and logging displays.
City police and the Iron County Sheriff's Department assisted with traffic control on Wednesday as the youngsters had their silhouettes traced on the bridge walls.
Santini said the students figured out the design for the murals in meetings at the K-12 school.
