Hurley Hall of Fame honors own

HURLEY -- The Hurley Quarterback Club and Sports Hall of Fame Committee inducted four new members at the Hurley School Saturday.

"This day means more than just honor," superintendent Chris Patritto said. "It is about community and the history of Hurley."

Gilbert "Gib" Trier, John Aijala, Larry Barnabo and Gary Pelkola were the inductees.

Trier, Aijala and Barnabo were inducted as athletes, and Pelkola was inducted as an honorary member.

Trier graduated from Hurley in 1924 and excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Jim Patritto presented Trier's award.

"Gib was proud of his association with Hurley athletics," Jim Patritto said.

Trier's son Bob accepted the award.

"Gib would have been proud of this," Trier said. "He never took off his Hurley ring. He was proud of his hometown."

Gary Gotta presented Barnabo and Aijala with their awards.

"Larry (Barnabo) and John (Aijala) weren't about statistics," Gotta said. "They were about winning and being teammates, and leaders in their own right."

Barnabo graduated in 1981 and excelled in football, basketball and baseball.

"Larry made his team mates better," Gotta said. "Larry's best attribute was him being a teammate."

"I have been very fortunate," Barnabo said. "Thank you for this honor."

Aijala graduated in 1983 and excelled at football, basketball, track and baseball.

"John always wanted more," Gotta said. "He always wanted more out of something. He also had a skill that you couldn't sit down and learn. It was speed."

"I would like to thank the Quarterback Club for this great honor," Aijala said.

Pelkola has videotaped games for the Hurley varsity football team for 21 years. He's been a member of many organizations associated with the Hurley School.

Hurley K-12 principal Jeff Gulan presented Pelkola with his award.

"Gary really cares about Hurley," Gulan said. "And that is what we need."

"Thank you so much and go Midgets!" Pelkola said.

Nominations for future induction are being accepted for coaches, athletes and boosters. Contact the Hurley Quarterback Club and Sports Hall of Fame Committee at P.O. Box 51 Hurley WI, 54534.
