Midgets rout Speedboys

BESSEMER -- An explosive first half vaulted Hurley to a 57-13 win over Bessemer at Massie Field on Friday in Great Western Conference play.

 

The Midgets led the Speedboys 51-0 at halftime.

 

The Midgets' first drive of the game was a four-and-out.

 

On the first play of Hurley's second drive, senior Jared Reid sprinted 43 yards to put the Midgets at the B-22.

 

On the next play, sophomore Jake Rowe ran in a 22-yard score for Hurley. Rowe ran in the two-point conversion.

 

The Speedboys fell short during their next possession, and tried a fake punt, but failed. The Midgets took over on the B-43.

 

Two plays later, junior Josh Thiede threw a 35-yard bomb to senior Cody Kivisto for the score. Thiede threw a pass to junior Dylan Laurin for the two-point conversion. With 4:44 remaining in the first quarter, Hurley led 16-0.

 

Hurley marched 60 yards down the field, with Rowe applying the finishing touches on their next touchdown. Rowe scampered 19 yards for his second touchdown of the night.

 

Hurley led 22-0 after the first quarter.

 

The Midgets kept going in the second quarter. Thiede ran the ball back 72 yards for the score. Reid punched in the two-point conversion and the Midgets led 30-0 with 10:55 left in the half.

 

Thiede picked off a pass on Bessemer's next possession at the B-30.

 

Four plays later, Reid sprinted 16 yards for the score.

 

Senior Jordan Holst kicked the PAT and Hurley led 37-0 with 7:48 left in the half.

 

Dylan Laurin recovered a Bessemer fumble and ran it in 10 yards for a touchdown. Holst kicked the PAT and the Midgets led 44-0 with 7:32 left in the first half.

 

With 48.2 seconds left in the half, Hurley scored again. Senior Trevor Vuorenmaa punched in a 2-yard score to give the Midgets a 51-0 lead.

 

In the third quarter, Bessemer scored for the first time on a 14-yard run by Pat Kapugia. The PAT was blocked, and Hurley led 51-6 with 1:33 left in the quarter.

 

The first play in the fourth quarter went well for Hurley.

 

With 11:48 left in the game, junior Alec Gulan threw a 53-yard missile to Kivisto for the score. The PAT was deflected, but Hurley extended its lead to 57-6.

 

Kivisto finished the night with two catches totaling 88 yards and two touchdowns.

 

The Speedboys marched 63 yards down the field and ended their drive on a seven-yard run by junior Daniel Sackman for a touchdown. With 6:53 left in the game, Bessemer cut the lead to 57-13.

 

The Midgets finished the night with 346 yards of total offense. Hurley had 258 yards on the ground on 38 carries.

 

Bessemer finished the game with 231 yards of total offense and had 132 yards on the ground on 26 carries.

 

Bessemer (1-4, 1-4) travels to Ontonagon on Friday for more Great Western Conference action at 7 p.m. EDT.

 

Hurley (3-2, 2-2) hosts conference foe Baraga on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for homecoming.
