Hurley beats back Butternut-Glidden

HURLEY -- Hurley used a solid day at the plate to stop Butternut-Glidden 12-4 Tuesday.

The Midgets played their first Indianhead Conference game as bundled-up fans watched the home opener. Weather played havoc with the early part of Hurley's season.

"Nice to get a home game in. Nice to see the sun shining. Nice to be out here period," Hurley (2-1) coach Aaron Bender said.

Hurley's offense shined in the first inning when the Midgets took a 5-1 lead.

Midgets' sophomore Daulton Levra led off the bottom of the first with a double. Dylan Laurin, Jeff Aspinwall and Brett Hockenbrock all walked, forcing in Levra.

Aspinwall scored on a passed ball. Terry Pallin singled to bring a run home and Cody Kivisto hit a double to drive in two runs.

Aspinwall scored again in the second inning to make it 6-1 Hurley.

Butternut-Glidden had two runs in the third to make it 6-3. Nate Riggs had an RBI single and later scored on a throwing error.

Hurley got one back in the third when Levra scored his second run of the day.

The bottom of the order got involved again in the fourth inning. Kivisto hit a double to score Pallin and Derek Chavers hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Gary Leoni. Levra hit his second double of the day to score Kivisto.

It was 10-3 Hurley after four innings.

Hurley has three more home games this week -- Thursday against Bayfield, Friday vs. Northland Pines and Saturday against Park Falls. Saturday's game is at 10 a.m., and the other two at 4:30 p.m.
