Reid advances to state meet

CADOTT, Wis. -- Hurley junior Jared Reid qualified for the WIAA Division 3 state golf meet with a second place finish at Tuesday's sectional meet at Whispering Pines.

Reid shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish runner-up behind Washburn junior Peyton Olsen's 73.

Reid and Olsen are not strangers, having battled before. Reid took top honors in a duel at Apostle Highlands earlier this season, but Olsen won the day at the Hurley Invitational at Eagle Bluff.

"Justin and Peyton will be battling again next year," said Midget coach Jeff Tenlen.

A field of 52 golfers in Division 3 will tee off in the two-day state tournament on Monday at noon at University Ridge in Madison.

The final round begins Tuesday at 7 a.m. The field includes 40 golfers from eight schools also vying for the team title, and 12 individual qualifiers -- including Reid and Olsen -- who were tops at four sectional meet across the state.

Tenlen likes the way Reid is playing.

"Jared's really hitting the ball a ton off the tee. He's playing very well," said Tenlen.

An eagle on the par 5 15th hole was the key to Reid's round on Tuesday, according to Tenlen. "He crushed one off the tee, landed an eight iron on the green and made a 30-foot putt."

Reid will play a practice round at University Ridge on Sunday with other state qualifiers, but it won't be his first time there.

"Jared lived down there for a while and knows the course pretty good," said Tenlen. "He used to ride his bike over there and watch the state tournament. He's played it several times. That should help him."
