  • Samsons close regular season with win

    Jason Juno|Feb 16, 2015

IRONWOOD --- The Samsons hope they haven't seen the last of the Lindquist Center this season. Gogebic Community College defeated Fox Valley Tech 77-65 Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Samsons finished .500 at home, 6-6. To play here again, the Samsons have to win in St. Paul on Feb. 25, against Dakota County Technical College in the NJCAA Division II Region 13 opener. The winner of that game hosts the region final that weekend. "I like our chances; obviously we have to play well and... Full story

  • Devils survive Speedboys to clinch share of East Division title

    Jason Juno|Feb 14, 2015

IRONWOOD - It's not often conference titles take a backseat to anything. But beating one of your biggest rivals with a wild finish in front of a pumped up crowd, that's hard to beat. Ironwood clinched at least a share of the Indianhead Conference East Division title with a 61-59 victory over Bessemer Friday night. The Red Devils need to win just one of their remaining two games to take the championship outright. The week started out bleak with a Tuesday loss at their other rival, Hurley, but... Full story

  • Midgettes stop Speedgirls

    Jason Juno|Feb 13, 2015

BESSEMER - Hurley put the finishing touch on its resume going into Saturday's seeding meeting with a 54-32 Indianhead Conference victory at Bessemer Thursday night. The Midgettes took advantage of Bessemer turnovers in the first half for a 35-14 halftime lead. Bessemer was led by Whitney Trcka's 18 points, including 11 in the first half, but the shorthanded Speedgirls didn't get a field goal from someone else until midway through the third quarter. "I think we sped them up; that was part of our... Full story

  • Midgets upset No. 3 Devils

    Jason Juno|Feb 11, 2015

HURLEY - Part of Hurley's 0-5 start to the season was a 27-point loss at rival Ironwood. Part of the Midgets' turnaround - and what now is a six-game winning streak - is a 53-37 victory over Ironwood Tuesday night. The Midgets upset Ironwood, tied for third in the U.P. Class ABC poll, with a monster third quarter, holding the Red Devils to just three points and scoring 19 themselves. "What a great win for us," Hurley coach Mike Swartz said. "We got down seven (at the half), we didn't hang our... Full story

  • DCTC nips Samsons as rivalry grows

    Jason Juno|Feb 9, 2015

IRONWOOD - The site of the tournament matchup between these two teams had already been determined, but Saturday's game was proof of how much of a rivalry this has become. Dakota County Technical College defeated Gogebic Community College 67-64 Saturday in a fantastic game that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties. DCTC swept the regular-season matchups. All it needed was the first win to host the NJCAA Division II Region 13 playoff opener vs. GCC on Feb. 25 in St. Paul, Minn. "This is a big... Full story

  • Gladiators dominate Nimrods

    Jason Juno|Feb 6, 2015

ONTONAGON - Ontonagon had its best night of the season offensively as the Gladiators defeated shorthanded Watersmeet 62-32 Thursday. The Nimrods won the first matchup 37-35 in the season opener. But Watersmeet, which only has six players on its roster to begin with, was missing senior captain Jessica Barajas (illness) this time. Plus, Ontonagon has played better of late, especially offensively, picking up its fourth straight victory. The Gladiators reached 51 points twice this season, both... Full story

  • Guards wear down Devils in battle of division leaders

    Jason Juno|Feb 4, 2015

WASHBURN, Wis. - Up-tempo Washburn exposed Ironwood's lack of depth, handing the Red Devils their first loss of the season, 64-45, Tuesday night. The battle of Indianhead Conference leaders was as good as advertised for the first three quarters. Ironwood took the early lead, Washburn pulled ahead midway through the second quarter and was able to pull away in a fourth quarter they started with just a seven-point advantage. That was due in large part because the Castle Guards ran the Red Devils... Full story

  • Midgets upset 2nd-place Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 31, 2015

HURLEY - South Shore's Blake Reijo poses quite a challenge with his outside shooting ability. Earlier in the week, Ironwood went with 6-5 Jake DiGiorgio to slow down Reijo (6-3). On Friday night, Hurley utilized 5-5 Kohl Manzanares with some help from 5-11 Colton Dowd against the Cardinal sharp shooter. Both strategies worked. The Midgets knocked off South Shore, which is in second place in the Indianhead Conference West Division, 56-42 Friday night. "I thought they did a fantastic job on h... Full story

  • Speedgirls survive Nimrods

    Jason Juno|Jan 21, 2015

BESSEMER - Bessemer held off Watersmeet's furious rally to beat the Nimrods for the first time since 2012 41-40 Tuesday night. The Nimrods defeated Bessemer in the last six meetings with the Speedgirls' last win coming on Jan. 20, also at the House of Noise. Watersmeet took the first meeting of the year, 65-43. This one wasn't a sure thing until the final buzzer rang as Watersmeet's Bethany Baldwin was stopped on a drive to the basket with a chance to win. "It's a big win for our girls,"... Full story

  • Gustafson towers over W-M Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 17, 2015

WAKEFIELD - In a battle of Indianhead Conference division leaders, South Shore's Megan Gustafson towered over everyone. The 6-3 Iowa recruit scored 49 points, grabbed 24 rebounds and blocked six shots as the South Shore Cardinals beat the Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals 76-46 Friday night. It was the first loss of the season for W-M, which fell into a tie for first in the East Division with Hurley. But Gustafson was dominant from the get-go, scoring 21 of South Shore's 24 points in the first... Full story

  • Ofstad's 3 sinks Finlandia

    Jason Juno|Jan 15, 2015

IRONWOOD - Gogebic vs. Finlandia. Sam Ofstad vs. Marissa Burke. Neither matchup could have been more even. Gogebic Community College's Sam Ofstad nailed a 3-pointer on top with two seconds left to give the Lady Samsons a 69-66 victory over Finlandia Wednesday night. The triple gave Ofstad a game-high 30 points, three more than the 27 scored by Burke of Watersmeet. "I didn't know how many seconds were left, so when I got the ball, I shot it right away," Ofstad said. "Luckily it went in. This was... Full story

  • Samsons fall to Finlandia on shot with 2.6 seconds left

    Jason Juno|Jan 15, 2015

IRONWOOD - Gogebic's shot to tie bounced around multiple times before falling. Finlandia's shot to win was far more improbable. Finlandia's Tyler Koski got to the basket and made the game-winner with 2.6 seconds left to give the Lions an 81-79 victory Wednesday in a fantastic game between U.P. college teams. "Tough to lose that way, but at the same time, good effort by the guys," Gogebic Community College coach Dennis Mackey said. "They never quit." There were often three All-U.P. Dream Team... Full story

  • Unbeaten Red Devils pounce on Panthers

    Jason Juno|Jan 14, 2015

IRONWOOD - Ironwood couldn't miss in the first half as the Red Devils raced past Ewen-Trout Creek 68-50 Tuesday night. The Devils were 5 of 6 from behind the arc in the first half and 13 of 20 from inside of it. That put the Panthers in a big hole, 45-20 at halftime of the non-conference game. Knowing they would be outmatched inside against the tall Red Devils, the Panthers started off with a man-to-man defense. "It didn't go well, so we figured we'd pack it in inside because they got lots of... Full story

  • Cardinals remain unbeaten after surviving Tiger test

    Jason Juno|Jan 13, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco's undefeated record hasn't been attained easily. The Cardinals completed its first trip through the tough Indianhead Conference East Division unscathed with a 46-40 win over Mercer Monday night. The Cardinals are a game up on Hurley in the loss column and are now two ahead of the Tigers. W-M beat both the first time through the schedule and is 5-0 in the division and 7-0 overall. "Mercer and Hurley, if you're going to compete for the East, you have to beat those... Full story

  • Devils cap 2014 with exciting win over Ashland

    Jason Juno|Dec 20, 2014

IRONWOOD- After winning pretty easily in their first three games, the Ironwood Red Devils needed a challenge. Ashland certainly provided that Friday night. Ironwood edged the Oredockers 57-52 in a game that featured 15 lead changes and five ties in front of a large, energetic crowd. "We needed a game like this," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. "We needed to get pushed. Ashland, they're 1-4, but they play the big Duluth and Superior schools. They're in the Lake Superior Conference, so 1-4 is m... Full story

  • Midgettes win 4th in a row

    Jason Juno|Dec 19, 2014

ASHLAND, Wis. - Hurley has been good at overcoming slow starts. After losing their first two games, the Midgettes have won four straight. The fourth in that run came Thursday night when they overcame Ashland's early 14-5 lead and went home with a 58-50 non-conference victory. The Midgettes outrebounded Ashland 49-27 and shot 13 of 15 from the free throw line, including 7 of 8 in the final three minutes. Hurley didn't let Ashland's early jump get out of hand. After the Oredockers took that... Full story

    Jason Juno|Dec 18, 2014

MERCER, Wis. - Watersmeet held off Mercer's furious comeback attempt for a 73-66 non-conference victory Wednesday night. Watersmeet freshman Bethany Baldwin scored 39 points, including some big shots down the stretch. It was the first loss of the season for the Tigers, who are looking to contend for a conference championship this season. "We just got outplayed tonight," Mercer... Full story

  • Panthers take down Midgets for first win of season

    Jason Juno|Dec 17, 2014

HURLEY - Both teams desperately needed a win and Ewen-Trout Creek came up with a 54-35 non-conference victory over Hurley Tuesday night. Neither team came into the game with a victory. The Panthers lost by a combined six points in their first two games, while Hurley has now lost all of five of its games, none of which they have played at full strength. "We needed a win in the worst way," E-TC coach Brad Besonen said. "The lingering effects from the end of last season, I think, were carrying... Full story

  • Midgettes quiet Screaming Eagles

    Jason Juno|Dec 16, 2014

HURLEY - Hurley picked up an important win for postseason seeding, 57-40 over Chequamegon, Monday night. It was only the fifth game for the Midgettes, but head-to-head matchups are key when coaches vote on regional seeds in February. Chequamegon is the only team from the five-team regional that Hurley faces in the regular season. "It's early yet, obviously; it's still important, but all games are important," Hurley coach Steve Eder said. "I know it sounds cliche to say that. It doesn't matter... Full story

  • Devils' first quarter dooms Midgets

    Jason Juno|Dec 12, 2014

IRONWOOD - Ironwood's 18-4 first-quarter lead quickly extinguished any upset hopes Hurley came into the rivalry game with as the Red Devils went on to win 48-21 Thursday night. The Red Devils scored the Indianhead Conference game's first 13 points in front of a large crowd at John Krznarich Gym. "It was very important; I thought we came out of the gates firing on all cylinders," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. "That really helped us, gave us confidence. Hurley's a hungry team because they're... Full story

    Jason Juno|Dec 6, 2014

IRONWOOD - Hurley found its shooting touch and picked up its first win of the season, 61-41 over Ironwood in Indianhead Conference action Friday night. The win was "tremendously" needed for the Midgettes, Hurley coach Steve Eder said. The Midgettes lost their first two games of the year, at Lakeland and at Wakefield-Marenisco. "I think it was important for our basketball family, for the girls and what we're trying to accomplish," he said. "I think it's something we can build on, playing this... Full story

GCC picked up a win the night before against Itasca in Grand Rapids, Minn., and got home in the wee hours Thursday morning. "Give Superior credit. They really pressured well, they moved well. They played the passing lanes well. They played good defense," Gogebic coach Mark Movrich said. "Another part of the problem, getting back as l... Full story

The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons held on to beat Milwaukee Area Technical College 64-59 Friday night in the Tri State Classic. The teams combined for 53 fouls and 65 free throws. Neither team, though, made more than half of them. Milwaukee turned it over 36 times, Gogebic 28. Milwaukee shot "better" from the floor at 30.4 percent. But even though the Lady Samsons missed free throws all night, they made them... Full story
