HURLEY - After a grueling regular season, the Hurley Midgets could breathe easily in their playoff opener. HURLEY - The No. 4-seeded Hurley Midgettes ended No. 5 Flambeau's season with a 3-0 sweep in Tuesday's WIAA Division 3 regional volleyball tournament opener. Hurley won 25-17, 25-16, 25-22. BESSEMER - Even triple overtime didn't seem like enough to settle this one. Hurley's Devin Czerneski ran in from one yard out in the third OT to give Hurley a 32-26 Great Western Conference victory over the Gogebic Miners Friday night at Massie Field. MERCER, Wis. - The Mercer Tigers aren't just beating Indianhead Conference East Division teams, they refuse to lose a set. The Tigers swept Ironwood Thursday night in front of a big and loud crowd. The Tigers easily won the first game 25-8 and then outlasted Ironwood in two hard-fought matches to close it 25-22 and 26-24. HURLEY - Hurley was as shocked Friday as Crystal Falls Forest Park was last week. Northland Pines came back from a 23-6 deficit to hand Hurley a 37-31 non-conference loss at Veterans Memorial Field. HURLEY - No man or woman has won as many Paavo Nurmi Marathons after Ben Schneider, 30, of Minneapolis picked up his ninth straight win at Saturday morning's 46th annual race. He celebrated by running his fastest Paavo - 2:33:01. His wife, Candice, 29, also won again, making for the fourth straight Schneider sweep, which happens to be the number on her race bib. His wife, Candice, is nearly fully healthy after winning last year's Paavo Nurmi Marathon with a nagging injury and then picking up her second best marathon time at Boston despite still battling the injury. Colin DiGiorgio and Ross Corullo of Hurley beat father-and-son Jim and Jason Hill in a one-hole playoff at Eagle Bluff for their first Hurley Quarterback Club Golf Touranment title. HURLEY - After Hurley won its first regional title in 26 years back in 2005, coach Gary Giancola jumped into the arms of one of his best players, junior Mike Swartz. MARQUETTE — Like her sister, Ontonagon senior Brooke Turin can now be called an All-U.P. girls basketball player.
