By JASON JUNO [email protected] ATHENS, Wis. - Top-seed Athens ended No. 4 Hurley's season with a 54-38 victory in Friday's WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal. Hurley finished the season at 16-6 with a strong effort in the semifinal, almost pulling within four points in the third quarter. But the Midgettes weren't able to generate offense off its defense and Athens was a tough 1 seed on its court with a tough defense of its own. "The last two days we worked on playing aggressive... ABBOTSFORD, Wis. - What a difference a year makes. After being dominated at Hurley in last year's WIAA Division 4 regional final, Abbotsford returned the favor Saturday with a 63-30 victory. The No. 2 seed Midgets never could get an effective offense going against the top-seeded Falcons. Abbotsford, with four players listed at 6-4 or taller, made Hurley pay for its attention inside with nine 3-pointers. "Our kids played hard. It was just like we were in quicksand all night," Hurley coach Gary Gi... Full story
HURLEY - Friday night was all about comebacks. Hurley's Jared Wendt missed three free throws heading into halftime and later helped forced overtime at the line while ending up with the game of his life. His teammate, Brad Vaara, had a big 3 in the final two minutes after fighting off injuries and a recent shooting slump. And the biggest comeback of the night: The No. 2 Midgets came back from a five-point deficit in the final 2:34 of the game to force overtime and beat No. 3 Athens 66-63 in Frida... Full story
IRONWOOD - A lot of people are going to Florida and Arizona this time of year. The Samsons are going to North Dakota and are thrilled about it. The Gogebic Community College Samsons beat Dakota County Technical College 85-78 in a NJCAA Division II Region 13 semifinal at the Lindquist Center Wednesday. That sets up a region final Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dakota College at Bottineau. The Samsons finished a perfect 11-0 at home and look to complete back-to-back region championships this weekend by winni... Full story
BESSEMER — Everything — everything — was stacked against Bessemer Tuesday. The fourth-ranked Class ABC team in the U.P., Ironwood, opened up a 17-4 lead on the Speedboys, which had lost three of their last four, and now were dealing with an ankle injury to leading scorer Ben Zielinski. The Speedboys, though, came back and pulled the surprising upset, 46-45 over their archrivals, on a buzzer beater by Lance Berwald, his only points of the entire game. “They were huge,” Bessemer coach Jim Partanen said. “It's a nice win. I hope the monkey's of... Full story
IRONWOOD - Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski picked up his 500th varsity basketball win in Friday's win over W-M. In his 22nd year as boys basketball coach, he's 259-212. At Andress High School in El Paso, Texas, he went 68-29 in three years ending in the 1988-89 season. As varsity girls coach at Ironwood, Lewinski went 173-143 in 15 years ending in 2006 when the sport moved to the winter with boys and Lewinski couldn't coach both the boys and girls anymore. Combined, he sits at 500-384. "This a... Full story
WASHBURN, Wis. - Once Washburn's high-powered offense moved into high gear, there was no stopping it. After putting up just 22 points in the first half, the Castle Guards scored 27 in the fourth quarter to move past Ironwood - which had led most of the game - 68-59 in a battle of Indianhead Conference division leaders Tuesday night. Each team won at home in the season series but only Tuesday's game counted in the conference standings. "That was two good basketball teams. That was two really... Full story
IRONWOOD — Michael Cretens is a good outside shooter. Just not Saturday, when he entered the final three seconds 0 of 8 from behind the 3-point line. Cretens got open, took the inbound pass with 1 second on the shot clock and drained the game-winner in Gogebic Community College’s 71-68 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Marinette. It was Gogebic’s second straight win and first this season without Bryce Bilski, who is now battling a knee injury. Cretens, a 6-1 freshman from Gladstone, was mobbed by teammates multiple times after... Full story
HURLEY - Hurley nearly came back to pull off another upset of Washburn, but the West Division leading Castle Guards were too tough in a 58-45 victory Friday. The Midgets shocked Washburn early in the season by coming out of Washburn with a win. Unfortunately for Hurley, that was a non-conference game. In the Indianhead Conference matchup Friday, Hurley held Washburn to a season-low 58 points, but the Midgets couldn't fully overcome a 16-point first half of their own. "They've been dropping 70,... HURLEY — It's been almost 10 years since an Indianhead Conference team came to Hurley and beat the Midgettes. It took a Division I prospect both times. On Friday, Megan Gustafson led South Shore to a 50-33 win over Hurley in a battle of Indianhead division leaders. On Feb. 2, 2004, Jolene Anderson scored 49 points in a 78-73 victory. Anderson went on to become the Wisconsin Badgers' leading scorer; Gustafson is being recruited by 14 Division I schools. "I came here four times when I was at W... Full story
At least for a few more hours, Allison (Bailey) Bottoms, a 1997 Ewen-Trout Creek graduate, holds the Upper Peninsula career scoring record. At 2,131 points, Bottoms, a 6-1 center, is one of just three U.P. girls basketball players to have scored more than 2,000 points. Crystal Falls Forest Park's Lexi Gussert will likely pass her tonight - she needs 13 - in the Trojans' home game against Bark River-Harris. She stands at 2,119 points. Gussert, a Michigan State recruit, is a 6-0 do-it-all player f... Full story
ASHLAND, Wis. - The shorthanded Hurley Midgettes trailed most of the game, but they fought back for a 44-42 victory over non-conference rival Ashland Saturday afternoon. Hurley was without Gabby Pecotte and Natalie Moon, who were both injured in Friday's win over Ironwood. The Midgettes led 2-0 Saturday, then trailed until Kirkie Pecotte hit the game-winning free throw with three seconds left in the game. Ashland built a six-point lead in every quarter, but it never was able to build it past nin... Full story
IRONWOOD - Ironwood was ready for Bessemer this time. After losing to the Speedboys in the first matchup last season, Ironwood overcame terrible shooting in the first quarter and a never-say-die Bessemer team for a 67-56 win Thursday night. "I reminded the boys what Bessemer did to us last year (a 55-51 win) and took us by surprise a little bit," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. On Thursday, "I thought Bessemer gave us all we could handle. I thought they gave us an excellent game and I give cr... Full story
EWEN - Opponents don't often leave Ewen with 34-point victories. But Lake Linden-Hubbell already is playing like the U.P. top-five Little 5 team it was last year and Ewen-Trout Creek is adjusting to an inexperienced team that is playing one of the toughest schedules of anyone in the U.P. Lake Linden won 84-50 on Saturday night. Even the Panthers' JV team went 18-2 last year and the E-TC varsity team hasn't finished under .500 since the 2004-05 season, so nobody was used to playing from that far... Full story
IRONWOOD - How did that shot not go in? Mesabi Range's Bacarius Dinkins, who scored a game-high 22 points, managed to get to the rim after his team inbounded it with 2.2 seconds left. His layup to win sure looked good, but it slowly rolled over instead of through. Instead, the Gogebic Community College Samsons survived with a 69-68 victory Wednesday over a good Mesabi team at the Lindquist Center. Home rims? God's a Samsons' fan? Nobody could answer the question: How did that not go in? "I t... Full story
BESSEMER - The Hurley Midgettes aren't used to losing Indianhead Conference games. Bessemer was tired of losing to them. The Speedgirls pulled away in the second half for a 75-58 Indianhead Conference victory at a House of Noise that lived up to its name Tuesday. "It's awesome," said Bessemer senior Sarah Trudgeon, who scored 17 points and was 12 of 12 at the free throw line. "We've pretty much been dreaming of this since the seventh, eighth grade because they're always the best school. "We want... Full story
HURLEY - The Hurley Midgets barely found their basketball shoes and they were playing one of their biggest games on the schedule Monday. After trailing almost the entire second half, Hurley forced overtime and pulled away for a 67-57 victory over Chequamegon. Besides giving the Midgets (2-0) some needed early-season confidence, the victory will go a long way towards postseason seeding. Chequamegon (5-1) is the only team from the WIAA Division 4 regional that Hurley plays during the regular... Full story
SCHOFIELD, Wis. - Hurley wrapped up another playoff run to remember. It would just like to forget the final 4 minutes, 43 seconds of the second quarter Saturday. Shiocton scored 22 points in that stretch to take control and the Chiefs went on to beat the Midgets 50-0 in Saturday's WIAA Division 6 state semifinal at DC Everest. Seemingly every cop car and fire truck in Iron County escorted the Midgets into and out of town Saturday. A huge Hurley crowd packed the stands despite the miserable wet... Full story
IRONWOOD - The ending may not have been executed perfectly, but 5-0 is 5-0. The Gogebic Community College Samsons won their home opener 73-66 over Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Tuesday at the Lindquist Center. "In my wildest dreams, I didn't think we'd be 5-0 at this point," Gogebic coach Dennis Mackey said. "But at the same time, every game we go to, we expect to win. With our size, or lack of, we've had to do certain things by committee. I'm happy." With the game in the balance in... Full story
HURLEY — Webster made the big plays in the first half. Hurley played its kind of football in the second half. The Midgets battled back from a 19-8 halftime deficit to win 30-27 in Friday's WIAA Division 6 thrilling state quarterfinal. Webster (10-2) used a big kickoff return and a fumble recovery to get its big first-half advantage. Hurley (11-1) didn't panic in the second half, instead focusing on what it does best, sustaining long drives with its dangerous running attack for three t... Full story
HURLEY - Hurley's offense may be among the best defenses in Wisconsin. No. 2 Hurley (10-1) dominated time of possession and blanked No. 3 Athens (9-2) Friday in WIAA Division 6 Level 2 playoff action. The reward couldn't be better. The Midgets host next week's state quarterfinal against No. 4 Webster (10-1), which upset No. 1 Edgar 14-6 Friday night. Maybe Hurley will let Webster have the ball a couple of times. Or not. "You look at our guys who just play offense and their jerseys are clean beca... Full story
HURLEY - Come playoff time, Hurley is used to seeing teams with different styles – those that pass a lot (Pittsville, last year) or run the option (Spring Valley, last week). But that's not Athens, which typically passes the ball less than Hurley. "That's pretty uncommon, I guess," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. "I think it's the kind of game we like to play." No. 3 seed Athens (9-1) travels to No. 2 Hurley (9-1) for a 7 p.m. Friday WIAA Division 6 Level 2 playoff game. The Midgets have b... Full story
HURLEY — Hurley found the best way to stop Spring Valley's offense in the second half: Keep it off the field. And Mark Saari cemented his piece in Hurley history during a 10-minute, second-half drive that kept the Midgets in control of the game. The No. 2 seeded Midgets' potent rushing attack — 65 carries for 443 yards — proved to be too much for the No. 7 Cardinals as Hurley won the WIAA Division 6 Level 1 playoff game 26-21 Friday. "Playoff football, you've got to be able to stop the run a... Full story
MERCER, Wis. — Shell Lake is some No. 7 seed. The Lakers grabbed the momentum after a first-set loss and used a solid offense to upset No. 2 Mercer 3-2 in Thursday’s WIAA Division 4 regional volleyball semifinal. The Indianhead Conference East Division champion Tigers finished at 25-5 with the 18-25, 25-10, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10 loss. “We went down swinging; that’s for sure,” Mercer Robyn Schoeneman said. “I couldn’t be happier with the season we had. One loss doesn’t take away the 25 wins we had.... Full story
HURLEY — Hurley finished the regular season at 8-1 with a 55-12 rout of Ontonagon in Great Western Conference play Friday night. The Midgets learn their playoff seed and matchup today with Level 1 scheduled for next Friday or Saturday. They should get a home game and a No. 2 or 3 seed is realistic, but there are so many variables it’s impossible to predict. “Good season, 8-1. Let’s get on to the second season now,” Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. “I think our team is focused. I think they... Full story
