  • Tiebreaker heartbreaker for Ironwood girls

    Jason Juno|Oct 18, 2013

HURLEY — Just two days before an even bigger stage, Ironwood came away with both individual titles and were a tiebreaker away from the girls team crown at Thursday’s Indianhead Conference Championships. Ironwood’s Jared Joki pulled ahead of Drummond’s Steven Carlson on the final loop behind the Hurley K-12 School and Ironwood’s Jessica Gering won the girls race. The Devil girls tied with South Shore with 49 points. The first tiebreaker is the sixth-place runner, but neither team had more than... Full story

  • Midgets breeze past W/B/SS, improve to 7-1

    Jason Juno|Oct 12, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley steamrolled past an outmanned Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore 49-6 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Field. Consider the first quarter. The Midgets had an opening kickoff return for a touchdown called back due to penalty. W/B/SS didn’t enjoy it long as Mark Saari ran 90 yards for a touchdown on the first play. He rushed for 172 of his 217 yards in the first quarter as the Midgets piled up 29 points in the frame. Saari rushed for four first-half touchdowns and it became his third ru... Full story

  • Midgets control Miners

    Jason Juno|Sep 28, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley shut down Gogebic’s offense, including drives inside the Hurley 25 to start both halves, as the Midgets rolled for a 30-0 victory Friday night. Hurley completed its toughest part of the schedule with a 3-1 record, recovering fully from a 31-14 loss to Crystal Falls Forest Park two weeks ago with wins at Northland Pines and Friday against Gogebic. “I’ve really been happy with how we responded after that loss,” said Hurley fullback Mark Saari, who rushed for 232 yards and score... Full story

  • Miners' comeback falls short

    Jason Juno|Sep 23, 2013

LAKE LINDEN —The Gogebic Miners stormed back with 20 fourth-quarter points, but it wasn’t enough to avoid their first loss of the season Saturday. The Miners have come back from halftime deficits in two of their three wins this year, but spotting Lake Linden a 16-0 first-quarter lead, in Lake Linden, bit Gogebic in the end as the Lakes held on for a 22-20 Great Western Conference victory. The Miners had a chance to tie the game after Paul Buerger ran two yards for a touchdown with 1:13 left in t... Full story

  • Tigers sweep county rival Hurley

    Jason Juno|Sep 20, 2013

HURLEY — Mercer dominated rival Hurley 25-7, 25-9, 25-15 in an Indianhead Conference East Division match Thursday. “Any win over Hurley is sweet anytime,” Mercer coach Robyn Schoeneman said. Mercer improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. “We were excited coming into it and we performed well,” Schoeneman said. “We had a really hard time getting our offense going tonight, but that’s something we’re going to work on over the weekend. Getting the ball to our hitters has been a little b... Full story

  • Ironwood's Joki, Gering win Indianhead Invite

    Jason Juno|Sep 20, 2013

MERCER, Wis. — What used to be a battle between rivals Ironwood and Hurley has expanded to Bayfield County. South Shore won the Indianhead Invite girls cross country race Thursday at MECCA Ski Trails in Mercer, Wis. The Cardinals totaled 48 points. Ironwood and Washburn tied for second with 54 points and Hurley was fourth with 57. “It came down to a place or two,” Hurley coach Hope Bretting said. “Fourth girls just inching out No. 5 girls. No. 5 girls just inching out No. 6. We’ve got our work... Full story

  • Forest Park dominates Midgets

    Jason Juno|Sep 14, 2013

HURLEY — Last year, Crystal Falls Forest Park stole a win from Hurley. There were no thefts involved this year; the Trojans dominated the Midgets 31-14 in Friday night’s Great Western Conference game. “They took one tonight, no question,” Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. “We usually don’t get pushed around here and we got pushed around here today.” The Trojans were able to somehow knock off Hurley 13-12 last year despite the Midgets rushing for more than 450 yards. This year, Forest Park (3-0)... Full story

  • Tigers rally past Speedgirls

    Jason Juno|Sep 13, 2013

MERCER, Wis. —Bessemer took the first game, but Mercer came back and showed why it will be very tough to beat in the Indianhead Conference East Division this season. The Tigers won 3-1, 19-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-10. After losing the first game, Mercer didn’t give up another 25 total points until it was ahead 9-3 in the fourth set. The Speedgirls battled in the third set, leading early and trailing 9-8 at one point. But Mercer went on a big run, giving up just four more points in the win. “Ou... Full story

  • Midget ground game drains Lakes

    Jason Juno|Sep 9, 2013

LAKE LINDEN — Hurley’s terrible stretch to end the first half was matched only by how well it responded in Saturday’s 30-20 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. It was tied 14-14 at halftime after the Midgets committed three special teams turnovers in the final minutes of the first half. But the Midgets bounced back, stopping Lake Linden three-and-out to start the second half and then scoring four plays later, on a 61-yard touchdown run by Roman Lupino. Early in the fourth quarter, the Midgets took... Full story

  • Cardinals start season with sweep of Panthers

    Jason Juno|Sep 4, 2013

WAKEFIELD — Wakefield-Marenisco started the volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep of defending Porcupine Mountain Conference champion Ewen-Trout Creek Tuesday night. The Cardinals won 25-17, 25-11, 25-16. “The girls have been working really hard over the last 2.5 weeks,” W-M coach Jessica Novascone said. “They’re very excited about this season. To come out here and be 3-0, they never really had a lull point in the game. They always kept that momentum up. To be able to come here and do that from... Full story

  • Cross country season starts in muddy Ashland

    Jason Juno|Aug 30, 2013

ASHLAND, Wis. — Thursday’s season-opening cross country race was called the Ashland Invitational. The Ashland Mud Run would have been more appropriate. The Ashland course was soaked after storms early in the week combined with a big one just before the meet Thursday that flooded and closed lanes on U.S. 2. There weren’t many dry spots on the course; even the rain rarely quit falling as the storms at least mainly stayed away. “It was definitely messy,” new Hurley coach Hope Bretting said. “I thin... Full story

  • Midgets blank Boscobel in prep season opener

    Jason Juno|Aug 26, 2013

WAUSAU, Wis. — Two goal line stands in the first half by Hurley kept Boscobel from making things more interesting and off the scoreboard all together. The Midgets started the season with a 34-0 victory over the Bulldogs, who despite losing their 23rd straight game, made Hurley work for a lot of what it got. The Midgets also had to work through losing running back/tight end/defensive back Jake Colassaco, who sprained his ankle in the first half. “We had to work our way through some things tod... Full story

  • Midgets seek to continue playoff, Great Western Conference streaks

    Jason Juno|Aug 23, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley isn’t going to find much sympathy for all of the losses it suffered through graduation. And the Midgets probably won’t need it. The Midgets’ all-time leading rusher, Jarret Rhenlund, graduated. So did Grant Innes, Mike Henning and David Mathias, all special award winners in the Great Western Conference. But ... Six players return for their third year as a starter. It may be the biggest Hurley has been up front and, somehow, the backfield looks as hard as ever to stop. The Mid... Full story

  • Big finish

    Jason Juno|Aug 17, 2013

HURLEY — Ricky Kelly of Hurley has spent a lot of the past 20 years helping people at the Paavo Nurmi Marathon. It was her turn last Saturday to cross the finish line after, of course, helping to make sure Wisconsin’s oldest marathon started without a hitch in Upson, Wis. Then, more than five-and-a-half hours later, she crossed the finish line to a sea of waiting volunteers, especially those from the Hurley Lioness. First she smiled. The tears rolled in right away. “That overwhelmed me and broug... Full story

  • Schneider sweep 3.0

    Jason Juno|Aug 12, 2013

HURLEY — When runners turned back onto Wisconsin 77, off County E near Iron Belt, Wis., it looked like the 45th Paavo Nurmi Marathon might have a tight race. Candice Schneider, 28, of Minneapolis, led Denise Hefferin, 31, of St. Charles, Ill., by just a few yards. “I just ran panicked after that,” Schneider said. “I didn’t want her to have it.” Schneider fought through her hip injury to pull away from Hefferin and win her third straight Paavo women’s marathon, about 40 minutes after her hus... Full story

  • Schneider and Schneider back to defend their Paavo titles

    Jason Juno|Aug 9, 2013

HURLEY — Ben Schneider’s third straight Paavo Nurmi Marathon win back in 2008 was one of his toughest as he didn’t pass Wakefield’s Ryan Holm until late in the race. His wife, Candice, 28, shoots for her third consecutive title in Saturday’s 45th Paavo, which starts at 7:30 a.m. along Wisconsin 77 in Upson, Wis. It could be her toughest as she recovers from an injury. Only two women have ever won three straight Paavos, Ann Heaslett (eight, 2001-08) and Mary Bange (seven, 1978-84). No male has... Full story

  • Yoopers play, ump at Little League state tournaments

    Jason Juno|Jul 30, 2013

ROCHESTER HILLS — As Upper Peninsula Little League teams compete in state tournaments, some of them have some company from above the Mackinac Bridge. Umpire Sam Fontecchio of Ironwood is making the rounds across the Midwest, with his traveling partner, umpire Steve Ritenour of Marquette. Fontecchio worked the 11-12-year-old boys Michigan state event in Ishpeming earlier this month. That included Portage Lake from the Houghton area, which won the district tournament in Ironwood. He figured he w... Full story

  • Penokee Range eliminated from tournament

    Jason Juno|Jul 11, 2013

IRONWOOD — Portage Lake scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to pull away and eliminate Penokee Range from the Little League District 11 (ages 11-12) tournament Wednesday. Portage Lake won 20-9 in 5 innings after Penokee battled back from a 10-5 deficit to trail 10-9. “The kids came to play today,” Penokee manager Scott Wilson said. “(Tuesday) they didn’t come to play, but they played well today. That’s part of Little League. It gets away from you and it’s hard to come back from a deficit. They... Full story

  • Midgets take to the gridiron

    Jason Juno|Jul 2, 2013

HURLEY — Football practice doesn't start for a month, but the Hurley Midgets had 40 high school players on the gridiron Monday for a Blugold Football Camp. The UW-Eau Claire coaching staff came to Hurley to conduct the camp for the second year in a row. “I knew we were going to have a good number of kids this year coming out for fall ball. To get 40 here today feels like the program is really going and continuing in the right direction,” Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. “Very happy. A lot of sc... Full story

  • Lane throws TD pass in West All-Stars' defeat

    Jason Juno, Daily Globe|Jul 1, 2013

MARQUETTE — Saturday wasn’t much of a day for offense, but Gogebic Miners’ quarterback Eric Lane helped account for one of West’s touchdowns. Seven local players took part in the U.P. Football All-Star Game at the Superior Dome in Marquette Saturday. The East lost its 19-0 lead, but held on for a 19-13 victory. The East scored the game’s first three touchdowns, two in the first quarter and one in the third. The West finally got on the scoreboard when Lane threw a 26-yard TD pass to Norway’s John... Full story

  • 5 locals finish high school hoops careers by the Bridge

    Jason Juno|Jun 26, 2013

ST. IGNACE — Dillon Gordon had one more chance to wear a Ewen-Trout Creek uniform — and not worry about his ankle. He took advantage, scoring 16 points for the North, which beat the South 94-81 Saturday in the U.P. All-Star Basketball Classic at St. Ignace. His ankle was at 100 percent three weeks after the season. Gordon, E-TC’s second all-time leading scorer, hurt it in the final regular season game and was limited in playoff action during his senior year. He wasn’t limited Saturday. He spla... Full story

  • Hudacek, Stevens take Division 2 U.P. titles for Red Devils

    Jason Juno|Jun 3, 2013

KINGSFORD — At 5-2, Ironwood freshman Rachel Hudacek doesn’t stand very high, but she jumps high, higher than anyone else in Division 2 in the Upper Peninsula on Saturday. The bar was just two inches shorter than her and she cleared it. Her 5-0 mark in the high jump made her a U.P. champion at Saturday’s Division 2 U.P. track-and-field finals in Kingsford. Cole Stevens picked up Ironwood’s other U.P. championship, with a 12-0 mark in the pole vault. “She’s not very tall, but she’s got great spr... Full story

  • Speedboys grab 3 U.P. titles

    Jason Juno|Jun 3, 2013

KINGSFORD — The Bessemer Speedboys came home from the Division 3 U.P. Finals with three U.P. titles. North Dickinson ran away with the team trophy, its 77 points ahead of second-place Pickford by 26 points. Bessemer was just five points off of second-place, finishing fifth with 46 points, one point behind Rapid River and two behind St. Ignace. Two Bessemer relay teams, the 400 and 800, are U.P. champions. Alex Smith won the long jump with his leap of 20-5. Taylor Smith, Derek Gheller and Art R... Full story

  • Devil of a day

    Jason Juno|Jun 1, 2013

NORWAY — What an up-and-down Friday for the Ironwood softball team. The Red Devils started the day with a 3-2 win over Ishpeming in a thrilling MHSAA Division 4 district semifinal. Kaitlyn Tollstam crushed a walk-off hit to score Dani McCullough in the bottom of the seventh, after Ishpeming had just tied the game. Friday ended with Rapid River blanking Ironwood 10-0 in 5 innings in the district final. Ironwood’s biggest strength all season has been its hitting, but the Devils snuck past Ish... Full story

  • Hurley's hurdler Saari hopes for state success

    Jason Juno|May 31, 2013

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Hurley's Mark Saari may not have a favorable seed at the WIAA Division 3 state meet, but he didn't have a high seed during the last two sectionals either — and he advanced to state both times. Saari is competing in the 300-meter state preliminary hurdles race at La Crosse today at around noon. He's seeded 16th with eight runners advancing to Saturday's final. Saari was seeded eighth at sectionals and finished fourth to take the last qualifying spot last week. "He knew it had... Full story
