  • Hurley bats quieted by Screaming Eagles in regional final

    Jason Juno|May 30, 2013

PARK FALLS, Wis. — Hurley left the bats in Phillips. The Midgets totaled just two hits and one run as Chequamegon won a WIAA Division 3 regional title 11-1 in 6 innings Wednesday. That was just a day after Hurley slugged 18 hits in a 12-9 semifinal victory over Phillips. It’s the fourth regional title in five years for the Screaming Eagles. Twelve walks and multiple errors compounded Hurley’s offensive struggles. Eight of the 11 Screaming Eagle runs scored on walks, errors and wild pitch...

  • Innes throws 1-hitter in Midgets' regional opener

    Jason Juno|May 25, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley pitcher Grant Innes took a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the Midgets breezed past Cornell/Lake Holcombe 11-0 in Friday’s WIAA Division 3 regional opener. Innes struck out 10, two in every inning of the five-inning game. The other out in the first four innings was a groundout. “That just seemed to be the rhythm there for awhile,” Innes said. “Four-seem fastball was blowing ‘em by pretty good. That just seemed to be my No. 1 along with the two-seam and curve.” The only ball...

  • Chequamegon rallies past Hurley for regional title

    Jason Juno|May 24, 2013

PARK FALLS, Wis. — The defense is usually the least of Hurley's worries. The bats and pitching were there, but Chequamegon took advantage of six Midgette errors to win a WIAA Division 3 regional title with an exciting 6-5 win over young Hurley Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles broke a 5-5 tie with an unearned run because of Hurley's final error of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, making four of the six Chequamegon runs unearned. "It comes down to, I always say defense wins games," Hurley...

  • Just like 2011: Midgettes hold off Lumberjills

    Jason Juno|May 22, 2013

HURLEY — Tuesday’s game played out a whole lot like 2011 and that was a good thing for Hurley. The No. 2 seed Midgettes held on to beat No. 3 Ladysmith 3-1 in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. Hurley travels to top-seed Chequamegon Thursday for the regional final at 5 p.m. The Screaming Eagles defeated No. 5 Cameron 7-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal. Hurley pitcher Brittany Czarnecki escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday, surrendering just one run...

    Jason Juno|May 17, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley pitcher Brittany Czarnecki allowed one baserunner as the Midgettes started the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament with a 10-0 victory over Washburn/Bayfield Thursday. No. 2 seed Hurley hosts No. 3 Ladysmith Tuesday in a regional semifinal. Ladysmith survived an upset bid by No. 6 Chetek/Weyerhaeuser 5-4 Thursday. The playoff game was also Hurley’s home opener and the Midgettes (10-5) played like they’ve been here all season, having no trouble with No. 7 seed Washburn. Czarnecki...

  • Midgettes' offense lights up Ashland

    Jason Juno|May 1, 2013

ASHLAND, Wis. — Ashland sent out an email to a bunch of teams Tuesday trying to find an opponent because it had a rare commodity — a playable field on a nice day. Unfortunately for Ashland, Hurley was the team that jumped on the chance. The Midgettes’ bats came alive as Hurley beat the Oredockers 18-7 on a warm Tuesday. The Northland College field was ready for action and both Hurley and Ashland were happy to be able to get another game in — even though it wasn’t scheduled until early Tuesday af...

  • Play ball (finally)!

    Jason Juno|Apr 27, 2013

RHINELANDER, Wis. — The Hurley Midgettes may have lost 2-1 to Rhinelander Friday, but they beat every other local team: They played a game outside. Even if it took until April 26 and an 80-mile drive to the southeast where the snowpack is nearly gone. Hurley plans on playing again today, three games in a tournament at Gilman, which is roughly between Tony and Thorp and is the site of the Midgettes’ 2010 sectional championship victory over Thorp. “We didn’t really play all that bad for not com...

  • Ironwood runner finishes race hour before explosions

    Jason Juno|Apr 16, 2013

BOSTON — Ironwood’s Donna Gering, 48, finished the Boston Marathon in 3 hours, 23 minutes, an hour and 6 minutes before two explosions rocked the finish-line area Monday. Her husband, Jim Gering, was watching the race across the street from where the second bomb went off, but left before that happened. He had even considered going across the street because the warm sun was shining there on the cool day. He didn’t because it would have meant a much longer walk to meet Donna after the race. “Like...

  • Lots of snow, few spring sports

    Jason Juno|Apr 12, 2013

Ironwood tried snowblowing the track at Longyear Field Monday. “It didn’t really go too good,” Ironwood athletic director Gordy Erickson said. “It’s all thick, heavy and icy. We are at an absolute standstill.” The WIAA softball regional tournament starts about a week early this year, May 16. That’s a month from Tuesday and the start of the season isn’t in sight. With another snowstorm forecast to continue today on top of feet of hard-packed snow and ice, spring sports on the Gogebic Range m...
