MERCER, Wis. - After going over 11 years without a win over their archrivals to the north, the Mercer Tigers now have a winning streak against Hurley. The Tigers fought off a spirited second-half rally by the Midgettes for a 59-51 win Friday night. WATERSMEET — Norm Ellenberger was known nationally as a showman on the sidelines in his early college basketball coaching days. In Watersmeet, he was simply Coach Norm. Ellenberger, who died in his sleep over the weekend at the age of 83, was calmer on the sidelines while coaching the Watersmeet girls basketball team the last four seasons. HURLEY - Hurley picked up its fifth straight win and fourth consecutive in shootout fashion 48-34 over North Dickinson Friday night. Both teams tallied more than 400 yards of offense and scored 20 points apiece in a fourth quarter that was a one-possession game until the Midgets iced it with a touchdown with 1:16 to go. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Ironwood scored four unanswered goals to defeat Phelps 4-1 in Northern Lights Conference action. The Red Devils overcame a sluggish start as Phelps scored the game's first goal. HURLEY - Hurley's 10th straight victory over Ironwood Friday night was its biggest in the impressive run. The Midgets defeated Ironwood 55-6, the 49-point margin of victory eclipsing the 42-point defeats last year and in 2012. Hurley only needed six first downs thanks to short fields from 134 yards on five punt returns and a turnover. The Midgets scored on the first play of the drive twice and had three four-play drives. ASHLAND, Wis. - The Gogebic Miners cross country program debuted with a fifth-place finish out of 12 teams in the boys race at the Ashland Invitational Thursday. IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons start the volleyball season with a tournament at Vermilion at Friday and Saturday. Coach Aaron Bender just wishes more players were making the trip than the eight currently on the roster. But the Lady Samsons have a good group of setters and outside hitters to make up for that. IRONWOOD - Sam Fontecchio of Ironwood won't have to leave Michigan for this Little League World Series assignment. Fontecchio was chosen to umpire the Junior League World Series (ages 12-14) at Taylor in Metro Detroit from Aug. 16 through Aug. 23. Fontecchio was an umpire in 2011 at the premier Little League World Series event, the 11-12 year-old series at Williamsport where the entire event is televised on ESPN. BESSEMER - New Gogebic Miners' football coach Mark Movrich has 35 players to work with in his first season. Movrich coached JV football for the Miners before this. HURLEY - Ben Schneider came into Saturday's race with a discrete, even human, bib number of 178, rather than the traditional No. 1 for the defending champion. Schneider, a nine-time defending champion coming in, maybe even felt a bit human just this once, battling an Achilles problem at Saturday's 47th annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon. The Penokee Range 9-10 year-old Little League team advances to Marquette to continue District 11 play Wednesday. For one year at least, quarters are out in high school basketball games in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association board voted Thursday to change varsity games from four eight-minute quarters to two 18-minute halves for a one-year trial. JV teams will play two 16-minute halves. The move is expected to help deeper teams because games will be four minutes longer. Games should also have more flow with teams not able to stall for a last-second shot as often. Colleges, clubs and Minnesota high schools already play with halves.... Full story

Zeeland West coach John Shillito, who has won three Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships, came 9.5 hours to help Hurley fine tune its wing T offense.
