IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Black River Harbor Campground is not yet open, pending water testing results, said Lisa Klaus, public affairs officer for the Ottawa National Forest. Water at the campground is being tested “to make sure water systems are operating at full efficiency,” said Klaus. Test results are expected back within days. HURLEY — The late spring meant a late start on crops, so the Iron County Farmers Market will not be open for business until the second or possibly third week of July. It will be open on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m., said Sharlene Shaffer, of Powderhorn Farm. BESSEMER — A project in the works to create some green space and honor heritage downtown Bessemer on Mary Street drew ire at Monday’s Bessemer City Council meeting, due to a lack of parking. IRONWOOD — Bill Bier remembers when his family went to Hazelhurst, Wis., to buy trees from a nursery to plant in their yard on Douglas Boulevard in Ironwood. They bought two trees, and one lived, Bier said. That was 75 years ago. IRONWOOD — Aspirus Grand View Hospital recently received approval from the board of directors to begin a $4 million renovation to the emergency room, chief operating officer Paula Chermside said. Chermside has been at Grand View for four months, and previously served as vice president of Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Gratiot in Alma for almost 20 years. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — A new handicapped lift has been installed in the Lindquist Center pool at Gogebic Community College, according to Diane Oliver, president of Snowflake Aquatics. The city of Ironwood donated a lift to the pool years ago, Oliver said, but it was not working well and did not meet new federal regulations. The old lift was hydraulic, and the new one is electric. “We would have had to close the pool if we didn’t get the new lift,” Oliver said. WAKEFIELD — Getting a reservation at Sunday Lake Campground can be a hard thing to do, according to discussion at Monday’s city council meeting in Wakefield. The first day to reserve a spot for the season is Jan. 2 and interested campers are lined up at City Hall or call on the phone that day to reserve a spot. “We know that day is going to be crazy every year. MERCER, Wis. — Saturday was a beautiful day for a bike ride for the 148 riders gathered in Mercer to celebrate Lupine Junefest, despite a lack of lupine this year. Linda and Glen Gilbert from Shawano, Wis., enjoyed their second year at the race on their tandem bicycle. “It’s the only time he listens to me,” Linda Gilbert said from the front of their two-seater. IRONWOOD — Saturday morning volunteers gathered at Ironwood’s Depot Park to pick up litter from city streets as part of Make a Difference Day. About 20 people came, said city manager Scott Erickson. IRONWOOD — Sunday morning a group of seven came to the Miner’s Memorial Heritage Park to plant trees for the third year in a row. This year, Mike Fauerbach donated 200 trees to the effort; 100 white spruce and 100 white pine trees. This year the planting was focused along the SISU ski trail area, as it gets quite windy during cross country skiing, said Monie Shackleford, president of Friends of Miner’s Memorial Park. IRONWOOD — “The only time I missed donating was when I had my knee surgery. Each pint of blood saves three lives,” said blood donor Jean Yurchak at Wednesday’s blood drive at the Ironwood Memorial Building. Eighty-two pints of blood were collected, said volunteer Dick Armstrong, which is slightly down from an average of 90 pints of blood.
