    IRONWOOD - A million dollars is within reach for some local youth after years of hard work and dedication. The Gogebic County 4-H Market Livestock Group is within $50,000 of hitting the million-dollar mark through its annual livestock auction during the Gogebic County Fair in August.     After a horrid November produced numerous snowstorms, the Gogebic Range has settled into a relatively normal winter. In fact, January's snowfall of 21.6 inches in Ironwood was about half the long-term norm of 44.2 inches for the month. The average temperature for January was 18.5 degrees, below Ironwood's long-term average of 20.3. The National Weather Service station at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant off Cloverland Drive recorded 2.2 inches of snow for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m.... Full story

    MADISON, Wis. - John Robert "Bob" Wiita, 53, formerly of Iron Belt, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015. He leaves behind three beautiful children, Angeline, Michael and Madelyn Wiita; along with his parents, Edward "John" and Donna Wiita; sister, Lori (Eric) Estabrook; niece, Alicia Estabrook; nephew, Gareth Estabrook; cousin, Dan Zizzo; and other numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.     ONTONAGON — Gene “Binks” Blanksvard, 72, of Greenland passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at the Aspirus Ontonagon Long Term Care Unit. Gene was born in Ontonagon to William and Ellen (Jussila) Blanksvard on Sept. 5, 1942. He graduated from Mass High School in 1960. He worked as a mechanic for Baullinger-Chevrolet-Olds (later Courtesy-Chevy-Olds). He also delivered fuel for the Gitche-Gumee Oil Company. He left Gitche-Gumee Oil to take a job as a mechanic for the Ontonagon County Road Commission where he worked up until his retirement. Gene... Full story
