To the Editor: We who have lived here all of our lives have seen the huge iron ore stockpiles freshly hauled up from underground waiting to be moved out by railcar bound for the smelters. Left behind to this day are the immense waste rock piles. These ore and rock piles have been subjected to all types of weather systems and all drainage going to the nearest streams and into Lake Superior, about 15 miles to the north. WAUSAU, Wis. - Jane Ann Hanousek, 75, of Ringle, died Feb. 5, 2014, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Jane was born on Jan. 14, 1939, in Wakefield, Mich., to the late Ted and Agnes (Gustafson) Johnson. She married Frank L. Hanousek on July 10, 1965, at Church of the Transfiguration Episcopal in Ironwood, Mich. Frank preceded her in death on May 22, 1990. Jane worked at the Ironwood Daily Globe as a summer intern in 1960. She then went on to become a reporter for the Dubuque (Iowa) Telegraph-Herald... Full story
WAKEFIELD, Mich. — Terry M. Hoag, 51, of Ironwood, born Dec. 23, 1962, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield. Terry is also survived by four daughters and seven grandchildren, Melissa Hoag-Gunter and children Kevin, Aimee, Angel and Lilly; Brandi Wilkey and son Conner; Paige Cowart and children Brandon and Loretta; and Amanda Hoag. PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A small army of electricity restoration crews labored Friday to reconnect nearly 300,000 customers in Pennsylvania and Maryland, and utility companies warned some will have to wait several more days. The lion's share of the outages remained in the Philadelphia suburbs, where many schools were closed for a third day, and a PECO spokesman said work was continuing around the clock. BESSEMER - What's with all these winning (and losing) streaks the Bessemer Speedgirls have been on this season? Bessemer started out with three wins, lost five in a row and now have won four straight with a solid 43-35 victory over Ewen-Trout Creek in Porcupine Mountain action on Friday night in the House of Noise. IRONWOOD - Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski picked up his 500th varsity basketball win in Friday's win over W-M. In his 22nd year as boys basketball coach, he's 259-212. At Andress High School in El Paso, Texas, he went 68-29 in three years ending in the 1988-89 season. As varsity girls coach at Ironwood, Lewinski went 173-143 in 15 years ending in 2006 when the sport moved to the winter with boys and Lewinski couldn't coach both the boys and girls anymore.
