  • Fire damages Ontonagon home Saturday

    Ontonagon — The home of an Ontonagon women was damaged in an early evening fire Saturday. The Ontonagon Village Fire Department was called at 6:44 p.m. to the Sue Austin’s home on the Rockland Road when neighbors spotted the fire. Austin was not at home at the time of the blaze. According to Fire Department officials, the fire started in the kitchen area and was contained to the kitchen area, but the rest of the home sustained heavy smoke and water damage.     ZIMMERMAN, Minn. - Reino "Ray" Ynve Waurio, 76, passed away in his home of 51 years on Lake Fremont in Zimmerman, surrounded by his loved ones after a battle with cancer on Feb. 28, 2017. Ray was born on Aug. 25, 1940, the son of Ynve Samuel Waurio and Mary Heikkila, in Ironwood Township, Mich. He attended public school in Ironwood.     ONTONAGON, Mich. — Verna Ann Halron, age 83, passed away peacefully at home with her family on March 3, 2017. Verna was born on June 30, 1933, in Ontonagon, Mich. to Ted and Lucille Sommer. She married James “Mickey” Halron on March 31, 1951, and they were only a few weeks away from their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary. Verna spent eight years working at the law firm of Walsh and Munro and thirty years working for the First National Bank of Ontonagon.
