On Thursday at noon, Hurley hosted the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch, providing an apple to every student in the school.     IRONWOOD - The success of the First Friday efforts in Ironwood continued with the Plaidurday celebration. The Friday downtown promotion included a 6 p.m. drone photo by Kevin Schneller in which about 150 people wore plaid. The First Friday events were scheduled to end after September but continue after demands from both the public and business community, city manager Scott Erickson said Monday.   • Hurley receives favorable audit

    HURLEY — The city of Hurley received a favorable 2016 audit report at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. A representative of the Wipfli company presented an overview of the audit, saying the city received an unmodified, or “clean” opinion. There were no concerns in the water-sewer budget. A few of the departments went over their budgets for the year, however. In other business, the council adopted an ordinance on housing and property maintenance.     KINGSFORD, Mich. - Rose M. Leskoviansky (Lesky), 86, of Ironwood, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at Manor Care Health Services in Kingsford, surrounded by her family. She was born May 1, 1931, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Francesco and Ida (Forte) Gironimi. She graduated from St. Ambrose Catholic High School in 1949 and went on to attend Gogebic Community College.     HURLEY - Lyna H. Hariu, 95, of Kimball Township, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, in Hurley with her family by her side. She was born March 8, 1922, in Saxon, Wis., daughter of the late John and Lilja (Jaskari) Luoma. Lyna attended Saxon High School and was employed in Chicago. She was also employed in Los Angeles as a clerk at a tool company and then as a receptionist at St. Mary's Hospital in Superior.     SPOKANE, Wash. - Eino Raymond Matiska, 87, of Bessemer, Mich., passed away in Spokane on Oct. 10, 2017. Eino was born Sept. 1, 1930, to Albin and Helmi Matiska, in Ironwood, Mich. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954, and worked as an electrician at White Pine Copper Mine for 35 years. Never one to stay idle, Eino kept busy after retirement working at the cranberry marsh, tree nursery, and ski hill at various times. He moved to Spokane to be near family in 2014.
