While the state’s unemployment rate for January was 3.1 percent, the rate for Iron County stood at 6 percent, followed by Bayfield County’s 5.6 percent. That ranked the two last among Wisconsin’s 72 counties. The worst job numbers for January were consistently throughout the northern counties. IRON BELT, Wis. - John L. Garro, age 78, of Iron Belt, passed away on March 17, 2018 after a brief illness. John was born on Jan. 7, 1940 in Ironwood to John and Evelyn (Peterson) Garro. He was a graduate of J.E. Murphy High School and learned his trade at the School of Vocational Education. He served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army.
