    HURLEY — Burton Industries of Ironwood has joined the businesses assisting the Hurley School District in upgrading its technical education cooperative program.     IRONWOOD — The snow total at noon on Tuesday in Ironwood from the most recent blanketing stood at about a foot, a day before spring officially arrived. The 24-hour snow total to 7 a.m. Tuesday in Ironwood was 8.5 inches, but it snowed heavily after that through about 1 p.m., in the inch-an-hour range.   • WDNR: Tribal spearing declarations mean more 1-walleye lakes for anglers

    Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp said Monday Chippewa tribes in northern Wisconsin are setting spearing levels that will mean more one-walleye lakes for sport anglers. As a result, the WDNR will withhold funds previously paid to the tribe. For the tribal ceded territory covering the northern third of the state, a DNR analysis indicates out of 535 lakes named for tribal harvests, 197 have been designated by the tribe at a level that will result in one-walleye daily bag limits for anglers.     APPLETON, Wis. — Josephine Vanderschaegen, formerly of Hurley, passed away on March 13, 2013. Josephine was born on Oct. 31, 1918, in Ironwood, Mich., and was raised there, too. Her parents were Anton and Antonia Skowronski (both deceased), both born and from Watcloviak, Poland. She was married to Clarence Vanderschaegen of Iron Belt on July 27, 1940, by the Rev.     DANVILLE, Ill. — Unseeded Central Community College upset top-seed Mott Community College 67-61 Tuesday in the first round of the NJCAA Division II men’s national basketball tournament. Central (20-13) of Columbus, Neb., advanced to the national tournament with an 81-75 victory over Gogebic Community College on March 10.     ASHLAND, Wis. — Hurley senior Sam Ofstad and Drummond senior Bethany Best shared the Indianhead Conference Player of the Year honors in girls basketball. Ofstad was named the East Division Player of the Year and Best the top player in the West Division. Coaches then determined an overall player of the year in the conference and Ofstad and Best share that award.
