HURLEY — Representatives from the Gogebic Taconite company spoke to the Iron County Mining Impact Committee Monday about possible reclamation at the proposed mine near Upson. GTAC president Bill Williams said studies on the proposed mine site would help shape ideas as to what the site could become after the mining process is completed. It’s time to put out the flag and welome mat for a group of local soldiers returning from the war in Afghanistan. The men and women of the 1432 Engineer Company of the Michigan National Guard, based in Kingsford and Iron River, will return Thursday. Among the group are a half dozen or so residents of the Gogebic Range. The unit is returning from a nine-month deployment in some pretty treacherous conditions, according to one source. To the Editor: National jobless claims for the week ending March 16 are at 336,000. That is a good number. That number was consistently above 400,000 and as high as 474,000 when unemployment was at 9 percent. National unemployment is now at 7.7 percent. Things are getting better across the country, but not so in Wisconsin, where the “job creators” get the tax breaks and the people that buy goods and services get their wages cut. WATERSMEET, Mich. — Lester “PeeWee” Neumann, of Watersmeet, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at the age of 92. He was born on Sept. 3, 1920, at home in Athens, Wis., to Anton and Thekla (Klein) Neumann. PeeWee married Lorna Scheu, of the town of Corning, Wis., on Sept. 27, 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS PCE 870 in the Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion Post 417 of Watersmeet for 53 years and was post commander from 1965 to 1969. HURLEY, Wis. — Mary Mattson Richter, 103, of Ironwood, Mich., died peacefully Sunday, March 24, 2013, in Hurley, three days before her 104th birthday. The former Mary Laitila was born March 27, 1909, in National Mine, Mich., daughter of the late Stefanus and Susanna (Simola) Laitila, and came to Ironwood in her teens from Paynesville, Mich. She married Earl Mattson on Aug. 17, 1930. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1965. She then married Erwin Richter on April 8, 1978. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1981.
