IRONWOOD — It will apparently cost $53,000 to clean up the blighted parcel the city of Ironwood condemned at 213 Bonnie St. The city commission on Monday will consider awarding a bid for that amount to Jake’s Excavating, a local company, for the removal of the structure and clean-up of the site. The former Peterson grocery store building in Bonnie Location was most recently owned by John Harteloo, who made no effort to clean up the site in the past few years, leading to the condemnation declaration because of health hazards. IRONWOOD — Flu season is just around the corner, typically lasting from October through May. HURLEY — Midland Services recently presented the Hurley Education Foundation with its annual “Cash for Kids” patronage check of $11,076. The program has been running for five years, and Midland customers can choose to credit any of their purchases, whether for gas, propane or deer corn, to the program, said Joyce Nelmark, foundation member. “It’s a great way to help the kids,” Nelmark said. “All the money goes to the foundation, and we decide what to fund. GREEN BAY, Wis. — Viola I. Maki, 86, of Green Bay, went to Heaven on Sept. 5, 2013. She was born on May 14, 1927, in Wakefield, Mich., to the late Axel and Lydia Kivi. She worked at Pauly’s Cheese (Beatrice Cheese) until her retirement in 1987. Viola was a very devoted, caring and wonderful mother and grandmother who was loved by everyone. IRONWOOD, Mich. — Eugene “Gene” Murra, 83, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Westgate Nursing Home and Assisted Living in Ironwood. He was born March 11, 1930, in Ironwood, son of the late Edward and Julia Murra. Gene graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1948. On May 28, 1960, he was married to Irene Calvi. She preceded him in death in September 2006. INDEPENDENCE, Ore. — Rose Marie Baker, 92, of Independence, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, due to complications of heart failure. Rose was born in Hurley, Wis., Oct. 11, 1920, to Vincent and Josephine Misuraco, the 11th of 17 children. She is survived by her sisters, Helen Kasper, Mary Wiita and Jeana Jancieski, and brother, Sam Misuraco.
