HURLEY — Dorrene O’Donnell is the new executive director of the Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce. BESSEMER — The Gogebic-Iron County Paisano Club held its spring dinner Sunday at La Panetteria in Bessemer, celebrating Italian heritage and scholarship funds raised for area high school seniors. Speaking to a crowd gathered for the annual event, chapter president Dorothy Walesewicz said the club was founded in Bessemer on August 6, 1969, making it 44 years old this year. To the Editor: In his letter published April 3, Joe Allen claims pro-wolf groups are the real enemy of wolves. I would hope Allen understands that eliminating the sick, injured, weak wolves strengthens the deer herd and wolves have the potential to control/eliminate diseases such as chronic wasting disease. Allen should know there is no evidence to support his claim that wolves are causing deer, moose, elk or beaver populations to “disappear.” He is promoting this unfounded argument to support a wolf hunting season. MELLEN, Wis. — Ruth Erspamer Spees, 48, of Hurley, died peacefully Friday, April 5, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, at Mellen Manor Nursing Home in Mellen, following a 10-year battle with cancer.
