LITTLE GIRL’S POINT — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has agreed to provide $20,000 for Gogebic County to continue dredging operations at Oman’s Creek this year, resolving a few years of negotiations. As a result, the Gogebic County Forestry and Parks Commission is seeking bids on dredging the boat access site at Little Girl’s Point. The site is owned by the state of Michigan and has historically been operated by the MDNR. The creek mouth often closes with strong north winds....
BESSEMER — “Red flags” were raised from the beginning, according to Desiree Lacosse, of Oshkosh, Wis., when it came to her late mother’s relationship with Kenneth Peters, 50, of Bessemer. Lacosse testified for the prosecution Thursday against Peters. Peters is on trial for murdering his wife, Lacosse’s mother, Ethel Grzena-Peters, last August. “My mom told me in the winter of 2010 that she was going out with a guy who had similar interests as her, and that he was much younger,” Lacosse said....
ALLEN PARK (AP) — Ziggy Ansah was born and raised in Ghana, playing soccer and shooting hoops without ever seeing a snap of football. He fell short there, but was willing to listen again when friends persuaded him to play football for the first time in 2010. It has paid off and then some: On Thursday night, the Detroit Lions made him the No. 5 overall draft p...

Domitrovich won the Ontonagon-White Pine Rotary Club contest and $482. The Ontonagon Area School Education and Enrichment Foundation received half of the contest money, the other $482. The foundation was p...

I feel it is very important at this time to bring you up to date with information concerning the Bessemer Area School District and the current bond issue. Before the current proposal, there were many in-depth alternative plans that were explored and investigated before the present suggested proposition that was put in place for a bond consideration. Some of the considerations, such as building a new school or combining the Washington School with the high school,...
To the Editor: The people in this small town never cease to amaze me. The willingness to devote their time, energy, and resources for the betterment of our little community is, at times, beyond belief. We are not a rich group of individuals, that’s for sure. Most of us are on fixed incomes and the rest are struggling to survive. Yet, when it comes to supporting our community, we are rich because we share the same goal. We want to see our town thrive and survive and are willing to go out of our way to make sure that happens. Whether it’s support...
