    Ralph Ansami|May 1, 2013

IRONWOOD — A portion of Norrie Park Road washed out on Monday evening as snowmelt continued to flood some Gogebic County roadways. The wash-out was near South Davis Road, according to an Ironwood Public Safety Department report. Norrie Park Road had been closed earlier because of standing water as snow in the swamps from the winter season’s 208-inch accumulation melted and covered the roadway. IPSD officers continued to monitor levels of the Montreal River near Norrie Park. The river app...

Peters is on trial for allegedly murdering his 79-year-old wife Ethel Grzena-Peters in August 2012. Prosecution Adams started his closing arguments by writing a list of things that were discussed in the trial; deceit, motive, opportunity, geography, topography, w...

  • Going into debt insures future

    May 1, 2013

To the Editor: There is a cost in doing nothing. We must all realize that as time goes by, all things need updating and repair. What is being proposed for the Bessemer Area Schools will put both our buildings and our students into the 21st century. Is there any good reason to not give our students every advantage others have in this country? Our grandparents and parents paid for our schooling along with buildings. Now it’s our turn to leave the school community in good shape for our present and future students. I would now like to talk about w...

  • Snow removal offers much time to think

    May 1, 2013

To the Editor: “April is the cruelest month” (T.S. Eliot). This April has too often been about moving widow-maker snow from a 90 foot long driveway to some neighbor-friendly site while waiting for the mother of all plow banks. I pace myself, working with a scoop and shovel; my carbon footprint is minimal, and any fossil fuel emissions are my own. It is a perfect time for thinking, and collating thoughts. Here are some of my musings and reflections. 1. We have a political genius living in the White House, and much of this genius has rubbed off...

WASHBURN, Wis. — Ironwood overcame a 4-0 deficit and then held off Washburn in the last inning to win 9-7 in their first game of the season in Indianhead Conference play on Tuesday night. “In the first inning, we were like a fawn trying to stand on its legs for the first time,” Ironwood manager Dan Niemi said. “This was our first experience outside the gym and it took us about three innings to get going. But I was very happy and very satisfied with the boys, because we didn’t lay down and we ke...

  • Midgettes' offense lights up Ashland

    Jason Juno|May 1, 2013

ASHLAND, Wis. — Ashland sent out an email to a bunch of teams Tuesday trying to find an opponent because it had a rare commodity — a playable field on a nice day. Unfortunately for Ashland, Hurley was the team that jumped on the chance. The Midgettes’ bats came alive as Hurley beat the Oredockers 18-7 on a warm Tuesday. The Northland College field was ready for action and both Hurley and Ashland were happy to be able to get another game in — even though it wasn’t scheduled until early Tuesday af...
