  • Annual gingerbread event a tasty treat

    BESSEMER - More than a dozen children spent Saturday morning making tasty creations during a gingerbread program through the Bessemer Public Library. Kids received all the parts to put together delicious gingerbread houses and listened to a Christmas story or two. Librarian Melissa Rajala said this was the second year the library has put the program on. "This is something the kids talk about all year long," Rajala said. "It was a lot of fun last year."   • Children's play tells story of Christmas

    IRONWOOD – Local youth and adults participated in the annual Christmas musical at Zion Lutheran Church part of the Christ Lutheran Parish in Ironwood. Actors performed the show "Arrest These Merry Gentlemen," telling a different side to the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The story followed two peacekeepers in the town of Bethlehem trying to follow leads about something "big" happening in the town.   • Bessemer celebrates holiday with hayride

    BESSEMER - Twenty-five people braved sub-zero temperatures to carol on an old-fashioned hayride as part of Bessemer's community Christmas party, departing from the VFW Sunday afternoon. Mayor Butch Semmerling donated the trailers and hay for the rides, and Neal Nelson and Larry Miskovich volunteered to drive. After the hayride, Santa and Mrs. Claus were inside the VFW for children to visit with, and enjoy Christmas tales.   • Sold out Christmas show is a 'Winter Wonderland'

    ONTONAGON - It was standing room only at the annual Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Foundation Christmas Show Friday. The show opened with a new set with sliding doors opening to a Christmas set and Jim Jessup and Mike Urbis in white and black tuxedos singing the show's theme "Winter Wonderland." But Lake Linden-Hubbell already is playing like the U.P. top-five Little 5 team it was last year and Ewen-Trout Creek is adjusting to an inexperienced team that is playing one of the toughest schedules of anyone in the U.P.     IRONWOOD, Mich. — Josephine C. Florek, 92, of Joliet, Ill., and a current resident at Keen Agers in Wakefield, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood. The former Josephine Perhalla was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Zokopian) Perhalla, and attended Luther L. Wright High School. She was employed in the receiving department at Marshall-Fields in Chicago for 33 years until her retirement in 1995, and had resided in Joliet until returning to Ironwood in August 2013.
