HURLEY — In the first outdoor track meet this season held in the Gogebic Range, South Shore came to Hurley and swept the Indianhead Conference championships Tuesday. Robert Menard of Ashland, Wis., spoke to the group of around 15 at the visitor’s center, warning them of the dangers of continuing an industrial society. SEATTLE, Wash. — Elaine Kleimola Leinonen, 79, passed away on May 9, 2013, near Seattle. She was born Aug. 29, 1934, the daughter of Jacob Kleimola and Elizabeth (Toolanen) Kleimola Sikkila. Elaine graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood, Mich., with the class of 1951. Elaine was married to Karl Leinonen for 43 years before he preceded her in death in September 1995. To the Editor: On Monday, the Daily Globe printed an excellent letter to the editor by Mike Korpela. However, Korpela missed one point. It’s very well-written and makes sense, except for again omitting Ironwood from consolidation plans. I moved to Bessemer 31 years ago and love it here, but am appalled at the animosity toward Ironwood. I used to attend school board meetings and in 1991 it was the same sentiment before that bond proposal. UPSON, Wis. — Gogebic Taconite plans to drill 13 test holes at its proposed Upson area mine site, where hundreds of core samples were removed in the past, according to an application to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. HURLEY — The Fat Tire Bicycle group met Tuesday night behind the Iron Nugget to enjoy its second night of riding this season in 80-degree temperatures. Group members have been riding together for more than 20 years, said rider Chet Kanipes. Tuesday night events are usually between eight and 12 miles of off-road riding, and Wednesday nights feature road riding of up to 25 miles.
