IRONWOOD - Ironwood's bag men and ladies hit the streets on a sun-filled Saturday morning. They collected any garbage they could find during the annual Make a Difference Day. ONTONAGON - Six teams competed for Barbecue honors at the eighth annual Barbecue for Life Saturday in Ontonagon. The proceeds of the dinner are donated to the Ontonagon County Cancer Association. Tom Domitrovich, co-chairman, along with Griff Roehm, said he was pleased with the number of teams entered this year. BESSEMER - After a five-year process, the Bessemer Downtown Development Authority will formally dedicate the city's new Ethnic Commons Park and Trailhead on Wednesday. The Gogebic Range Concert Band will play "The Star Spangled Banner" while the A.D. Johnston Choir sing the lyrics. In addition to dedicating the new park, the event will also celebrate the 200th anniversary of "The Star Spangled Banner," written by Francis Scott Key. IRONWOOD - Three locals gathered at the historical depot park Sunday afternoon to take part in a bike ride from Ironwood to Bessemer. The Gogebic Range bike ride was scheduled to begin at the park Sunday, but it was cancelled due to weather. Regardless, Sandy and Faith Pera, of Wakefield, began their ride at 1 p.m. Sunday, just as scheduled. "We're hoping to beat the rain," Sandy said. BESSEMER - Twenty-four sophomore and junior girls visited Gogebic Community Colllege and Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District's building trades class project home in Bessemer on May 22 as the final field trip of the Women in Construction events sponsored by the GOISD's Career Tech Education program this school year. WAUSAU, Wis. - Gertrude Z. Sullivan, age 78, of Wausau, former long time area resident, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, in Wausau. She was born April 30, 1936, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Joseph and Zella (Yankee) Lauzon. Gertrude graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1954. She had been employed at the Northern Bakery, Randall Bakery, Ironwood Laundry, and Hautamaki's Nursing Home. On Feb. 5, 1955, she was united in marriage with John Leo Sullivan. KINCHELOE, Mich. — Michael Louis Kooiker Brostoski, DO, MBA, 38, born May 23, 1976 in Hinsdale, Ill., died at home in Kincheloe on May 29, 2014. Michael was a doctor and a scholar. He grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and was always there with a helping hand for those in need. ASHLAND, Wis. — Stefania Kochajkiewicz, 88, of Martha Lake Road, Mercer, died Saturday, May 31, 2014 in Ashland. She was born June 1, 1925 in Chernow, Poland, daughter of the late Marion and Harriet (Grabawska) Zachkiewicz. Stefania attended schools in Poland and worked in the camps in Germany. On June 6, 1945 she was married to Stanislaw Kochajkiewicz in Augsburg, Germany. They moved to Chicago in March of 1951, where Stafania was employed at Jay’s Potato Chips for 23 years until retirement. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, dancing and gardening... Full story
