  • Woman killed, man injured in Saxon Harbor ATV crash

    SAXON, Wis. — A fatal all-terrain vehicle accident that occurred Tuesday evening at Saxon Harbor is under investigation by the Iron County Sheriff’s Department. The accident involving a Milwaukee area couple occurred around 7 p.m. The brakes on the ATV reportedly failed and the machine went down a cliff on Lake Superior, killing the female passenger and injuring the male driver, 44.   • G-Tac submits plan for excavating rock

    MADISON, Wis. — Gogebic Taconite, LLC, has submitted a plan to the Department of Natural Resources outlining five sites where the company is proposing to excavate and sample rock to assess the mineral deposits. The WDNR received a bulk sampling plan June 17 from the company for mining activities related to the Gogebic deposit located near Upson, in the Penokee Range of Ashland and Iron counties.   • 17th annual Relay for Life begins Friday

    BESSEMER — The 17th annual Relay for Life kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m. at Massie Field in Bessemer. The event runs for 24 hours, ending at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Fourteen teams are competing this year, under the theme “Make Cancer Walk the Plank.” Event representative Carol Lillar said the goal is to raise $30,000 for cancer research.     IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Black River Harbor Campground is not yet open, pending water testing results, said Lisa Klaus, public affairs officer for the Ottawa National Forest. Water at the campground is being tested “to make sure water systems are operating at full efficiency,” said Klaus. Test results are expected back within days. She was born on Nov. 20, 1919, in Ironwood, Mich., to the late Joseph and Anna (Kubin) Gayan. Ann was educated in Ironwood schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1938.
