BESSEMER - The Bessemer Downtown Development Authority held a special meeting Thursday to discuss the possible purchase of the old Gambles store at 221 S. Sophie St. The building houses Trout Lily Art & Design and is going up on auction for at least $8,700 in August, the amount owed in back taxes. ONTONAGON — Arrangements have been finalized for the funeral of Navy Fireman Second Class Lowell Earl Valley, from Ontonagon, killed during an attack on the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, July 14, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. Full military honors will be performed by the U.S. Navy. HURLEY, Wis. - Walter I. Hess, 86, of 308 Iron St., Hurley, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018, following a brief illness. Walt was born on May 11, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Irwin and Catherine (Bruen) Hess. He attended schools in the Chicago area before enlisting and serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to November 1955. MELLEN, Wis. — Norbert “Nubs” W. Koosmann, 84, of Mellen, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at his residence. Norbert was born Sept. 12, 1933, in Mellen, the son of Wilhelm H. and Frieda G. (Bonitz) Koosmann. On Sept. 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joyce A. Saari in Ironwood, Mich. He was employed at the veneer mill in Mellen for over 45 years. MARENISCO, Mich. — Earl “Bud” Charles, 79, a long-time resident of Marenisco, passed away Wednesday morning, July 4, 2018. Bud was born on Aug. 11, 1938, in Winegar (Presque Isle), Wis., a son of Earl Victor and Elizabeth “Betty” (Andersen) Charles. He attended school in Presque Isle and Marenisco.
