    HURLEY — Ben Schneider’s third straight Paavo Nurmi Marathon win back in 2008 was one of his toughest as he didn’t pass Wakefield’s Ryan Holm until late in the race. His wife, Candice, 28, shoots for her third consecutive title in Saturday’s 45th Paavo, which starts at 7:30 a.m. along Wisconsin 77 in Upson, Wis.   • Finance committee hires economic support specialist

    HURLEY — The Iron County Finance Committee approved hiring of a third economic support specialist for the Iron County Human Services Department Thursday. At its July meeting, the committee approved hiring of two economic support specialists for the department, as required by the state of Wisconsin. The hiring does not cost the county any money, as the position is funded entirely by the state.     BEAUMONT, Calif. (AP) — A growing wildfire chewed through a rugged Southern California mountain range on Thursday, damaging buildings, threatening as many as 600 homes and forcing some 1,500 people to flee.
