    IRONWOOD - A mountain lion image caught on a landowner's trail camera in Gogebic County has been confirmed as the state's 39th cougar report since 2008. The cat was photographed July 7 in daylight hours northwest of Ironwood, according to a Monday press release. In his report to the Ironwood City Commission on Monday, Erickson said it is still not known if the civic center will be able to be rebuilt or need to be replaced with a new structure after the roof collapsed from heavy snow in March. Ordinance No. 58 would repeal and replace the existing Ordinance No. 14, which was enacted in 1975. “The old ordinance lacked a number of things, so what this does is update (the language),” said LeRoy Johnson, the township’s deputy supervisor and zoning administrator.     VIROQUA, Wis. — Dorothy E. Peterson, 89, formerly of Ironwood, Mich. and Westby, Wis., died June 25, 2019, while in residence at the Bland-Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua. Dorothy was born in Cashton, daughter of the late Bernard “Ben” and Clara (Erickson) Einer. Raised on the family dairy farm, she attended school in Cashton, and graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1947. She met her husband, Theron I. Peterson, while both were attending UW-La Crosse and they married on Dec. 22, 1947. They moved to Ironwood in 1957... Full story

    WAKEFIELD, Mich. — Helene Rautanen, 92, of Wakefield, formerly of Bergland, passed away at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility on Aug. 6, 2019, surrounded by her close friends. She was born on Dec. 24, 1926, in Breslau Salasia Germany to the late Ernest and Irmgard (Kube) Knebel. On June 5, 1952, Helene Knebel married Armas Rautanen in Homberg, Germany. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2011, in Ironwood.
