HURLEY — A vast majority of the people attending a hearing on mining in Hurley on Thursday morning spoke against allowing bulk sampling and the Gogebic Taconite mine in general. We just happened to catch the Discovery Channel showing of Terry Bradshaw’s “Today in America” which featured Bessemer. What great national coverage of the city. IRONWOOD, Mich. — Carl Henry Stengard, of Ironwood, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at the age of 97. He was born in South Bessemer on May 13, 1916, to Victor and Eliina (Pukkila) Stengard. He attended Harding School and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer.
