HURLEY - Daniel Hitchcock, of Hurley, is recovering well after going through surgery on his left lung as a result of pneumonia last week. Hitchcock, a 3-4 specialist, has been serving in Afghanistan with the 829th Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army as a National Guard Reservist since June. He recently became ill with pneumonia and his left lung filled with fluid and the lining of the lung became infected. MERRIWEATHER — Ardis D. Niemi, 79, of Merriweather, passed away peacefully at her home on Aug. 20, 2014. She was born May 20, 1937, daughter of the late Sherman and Evelina Pendock. On April 15, 1971, she married Daniel M. Niemi. He survives, along with an extended family. Funeral services for Ardis will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Cane Funeral Home Bruce Crossing Chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. IRONWOOD, Mich. - Gayl P. Mattson, 73, of Ironwood, died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, in her home, with her loving family by her side. The former Gayl Waterman was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Wakefield Township, daughter of the late Clement and Ida (Taube) Waterman, and attended Wakefield schools.
