  • Midgets seek to continue playoff, Great Western Conference streaks

    Jason Juno|Aug 23, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley isn’t going to find much sympathy for all of the losses it suffered through graduation. And the Midgets probably won’t need it. The Midgets’ all-time leading rusher, Jarret Rhenlund, graduated. So did Grant Innes, Mike Henning and David Mathias, all special award winners in the Great Western Conference. But ... Six players return for their third year as a starter. It may be the biggest Hurley has been up front and, somehow, the backfield looks as hard as ever to stop. The Mid...

  • Braun finally admits drug use in 2011

    The Associated Press|Aug 23, 2013

A month after acknowledging only that he made “mistakes,” Ryan Braun admitted taking performance-enhancing drugs during his NL MVP season of 2011. The suspended Milwaukee slugger said he took a cream and a lozenge containing banned substances while rehabilitating an injury. “It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately,” Braun said in a statement released by the Brewers. Braun tested positive for elevated testosterone...

  • Verlander struggles but avoids loss to Twins

    Aug 23, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander still hasn’t lost to the Minnesota Twins in more than three years, though he came awfully close on Thursday. The Detroit Tigers ace left after the seventh inning with the game tied. He benefited from a four-run rally that got him off the hook for what would have been his first loss to the Twins since April 2010. However, that didn’t brighten his mood because an eighth-inning run was enough to give the Twins a 7-6 win over his Tigers. “Today was tough,” Verlander...

  • Mining company shouldn't let negativity stop them

    Aug 23, 2013

To the Editor: I attended the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources public hearing on Aug. 15 in Hurley regarding Gogebic Taconite’s request for bulk sampling and pre-application notice for a mining permit. I take exception with the Daily Globe’s front-page article on Aug. 16, “Many residents oppose Gogebic Taconite mine.” Between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon, I believe only two speakers actually resided in Iron County. The vast majority of speakers were from out of town or county, and many were from out of state. One speaker was even fr...
