By PAMELA JANSSON [email protected] ONTONAGON - If you like hippie fashion, infectious beats and the sight of people of all ages in a wave of generational joy, then you were probably at the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival, held last weekend on Friday and Saturday at the Porkies Ski Complex in Ontonagon. This is one locale in which you may expect to find, on a single person, every color in the paint store, while also surrounded by crocheted hats, creative footwear, tassels, and...
By PAMELA JANSSON [email protected] WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield City Council anticipates leaning hard into plans for alternative energy as it faces related state rulings that are becoming increasingly strict. City manager Robert Brown Jr. told The Globe on Tuesday that the city has asked AEP Energy of Ohio, its electrical provider, to explore options in using solar energy. “If a project could get off the ground, it would not only allow us to comply with state law, but we also could generate our own power,” he said regarding the solar...
By JASON JUNO [email protected] IRONWOOD — Ironwood has a small roster and a new quarterback. But they’re also a motivated team ready to take on a challenging schedule. The Red Devils have just 18 players on the roster and they are working on transitioning Nick Miskovich from receiver to quarterback. Coach Kevin Lane is excited about Miskovich’s potential at the quarterback spot as the Red Devils get ready to start the season with a Thursday home game against Munising at 5 p.m. He also thinks the team can get past any limitations from...
By JASON JUNO [email protected] HURLEY — There’s no doubt Hurley’s going to look a little different this fall in their first season as an 8-player team. They switched to an option offense. They’re adjusting to a narrower field. And scoring’s probably going to go up a little bit. But 8-player football is still football. The Northstars still expect to run the ball the vast majority of the team. Defense still counts. And Hurley still expects to have a good shot to win every game they play in. “This was done out of necessity,...
By JASON JUNO [email protected] BESSEMER --- The Gogebic Miners have some experienced seniors at key roster spots. The benefits have been showing up throughout the preseason. Bode Lynott, for instance, gave rides to teammates for summer weightlifting sessions. Coach Nick Heikkila hasn’t had to rehash a lot of things from last year with the veterans picking up where they left off during these August practices. Plus they’re motivated to keep it going once the season kicks off. “It’s nice, we’ve got these seniors, these seniors have goal...
By JASON JUNO [email protected] ONTONAGON — New Ontonagon coach Kadin Mustafa was ready for the season to start after last week’s scrimmage. He’s got a team he thinks is capable of big things — including coming out on top of a tough conference — and the Gladiators’ performance in the preseason scrimmage fired him up even more. “Oh I’m juiced” to coach, Mustafa said, “especially after what I saw today.” Mustafa played football at Bark River-Harris and he coached defense for the Gladiators last year. He became head coach going into this...
