MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday said biologists have confirmed two cougar sightings in northern Wisconsin in recent months - the first confirmed so far in 2014. The cougars were photographed with trail cameras on private land in Lincoln and Marinette counties. They follow a string of such observations since 2008. WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP - Due to a decrease in taxable property value Wakefield Township residents will get a slight tax break for 2014's tax year. The Wakefield Township Board approved a new millage rate at its meeting Tuesday, which is slightly lower than 2013's rate and will generate roughly $27,000 less in township revenue. IRONWOOD - Two members of the Daily Globe staff won awards in the Michigan Press Association's 2014 Better Newspaper Contest. Staff writer Cortney Ofstad and sports editor Jason Juno both took third place in awards announced earlier this week. Ofstad took third place among 29 entries in the Local Columnist competition. WEST ALLIS, Wis. - Hurley eighth grader Dayne Stuhr competed at the 2014 Wisconsin State 4-H Horse Expo, facing other 4-H horse members from across the state. The expo was Sept. 11-14 at the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, near Milwaukee. Stuhr traveled with his American quarter horse, Izzy. The mare's registered name is She's Good N' Plenty. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Lawrence F. Machesky, 86, passed away at his home in Las Vegas on Aug. 15, 2014, with his family present at his bedside. Lawrence was born Dec. 9, 1927, to the late Joseph and Adela Machesky in Gile, Wis. He married Shirley A. Wyzlic on June 12, 1950, at St. Michael's Church in Ironwood, Mich.
