  • Students plant flowers in downtown Bessemer, Hurley

    Students from Washington Elementary School in Bessemer and Hurley K-12 School got their hands dirty Monday and planted flowers in their respective downtowns. Washington Elementary School teacher Gene Goss and his fifth-grade students moved his class outside to enjoy the sunny weather and beautify their city. "This is an excellent program here," Goss said.   • Ontonagon village manager expects dollar store permit request shortly

    ONTONAGON – Ontonagon Village Manager Joe Erickson told the Village Council Monday that engineers for a new dollar store in Ontonagon have been on the proposed site for the store and he expects a request will be made next week for a building permit to start the new structure. The new Family Dollar will be erected on M-38 across from the Ontonagon Court House and next to the former Pamida store.     NORWAY - It is said that good pitching and solid defense wins baseball games and there was plenty of both on display in the MHSAA District 97 semifinal between North Central and the Ironwood Red Devil Devils on Monday. He attended local grade schools in Ironwood, graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1948 and Gogebic Junior College in 1950.     HURLEY, Wis. — On June 6, 2015, we will celebrate the life of Katherine “Sis” Gulan, longtime resident of Gile, who entered God’s loving arms on Nov. 23, 2014, at age 95. Katherine was born in Montreal on June 11, 1919, the daughter of James and Margaret (Milo) Nagro. She attended the Montreal School and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School.     LAKE GOGEBIC, Mich. - Roy Arthur Winter, 82, of Lake Gogebic, was called home to the Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2015. Roy was born Nov. 18, 1932, to Jesse and Hattie Winter in Kennan, Wis.
