  • Grease fire quickly spreads through Freddie's in Hurley

    Ralph Ansami|Oct 18, 2014

HURLEY - For the second time in less than a year, a Hurley nightspot was struck by a major fire on Friday evening. A grease fire started at Freddie's Old-Time Saloon on Silver Street, causing heavy smoke to quickly spread throughout the building while patrons were dining or sipping drinks. The fire began around 7:15 p.m. A customer in the tavern who didn't want to be identified said he tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but lost the battle when it contained no more retardant. H...

  • Midgets lose by an extra point to Mountaineers

    Jason Juno|Oct 18, 2014

HURLEY - It was fitting that Hurley ended the regular season with another down-to-the-wire contest. A missed two-point conversion and some missed opportunities prevented the evenly-played game from ending in Hurley's favor as Iron Mountain won 23-22 Friday night. It was the fourth Hurley game this season that was decided in the final moments. Hurley finished the regular season at 7-2. With that record, the Midgets should get a first-round playoff home game in today's WIAA Division 6 seeding...

  • Copper Kings spoil Red Devils' final home game

    Pat Krause|Oct 18, 2014

IRONWOOD — In Ironwood’s final home game of the year, Calumet scored early and often and blitzed Ironwood 42-8 in West-PAC action on a rain-soaked Friday night. “I’m very happy with where we’re at right now,” Calumet coach John Croze said. “That was our fifth win and we’ll probably get in the playoffs, because we’re the top Class C team in points. Our game is executing with intensity and when we do it well, we’re a pretty tough team.” The Copper Kings came into the game with a 4-3 record, which was a little deceiving. Croze said the team t...

  • Reclamation plans not next logical step

    Oct 18, 2014

To the Editor: The Iron County Mining Impact Committee asked for the public and students to submit reclamation plans for the proposed G-Tac mine. No public comment is allowed, but some plans will be chosen and the committee will ask the authors questions regarding their submissions. But, the Iron County Board has signed a lease for that land which specifically states they will not interfere with mining, beneficiation (taconite processing) or reclamation plans. Some board members who signed this are on the impact committee. They discuss reclamat...

  • Beautification of Ironwood takes a hit

    Oct 18, 2014

To the Editor: The other day I was shaking my head in dismay when I read an article in the Daily Globe about the destruction of one of the women’s bathrooms at Depot Park in Ironwood. After all the hard work that has been put into beautifying and improving this fair city for its citizens and visitors, it made me wonder why someone could be so shortsighted. In the 1960s, Lady Bird Johnson set out on a mission for the beautification of America. Johnson was a lifelong advocate for beautifying the nation’s cities and highways. “Where flowers bloom,...

  • Arthur Bryce Gribble

    Oct 18, 2014

ELY, Nev. — Blessed are children whose parents exemplify the love and character traits which benefit all mankind. Even more blessed are those children whose siblings reflect and intensify these qualities. Such a brother and child of God was Arthur Bryce Gribble, who died Oct. 1, 2014, at his home in Ely. Bryce was born in Ironwood, Mich., on Aug. 18, 1933, just 15 minutes shy of his brother’s first birthday. His parents, John N. and LaRue (Lobb) Gribble, were lifelong residents of the Gogebic Range and inveterate campers, fishermen, hun...
