  • Wakefield's new municipal building get dedication

    By KELSEY HANSEN news@yourdailyglobe.com WAKEFIELD - Monday night marked the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the recently purchased Wakefield Municipal Building. More than 60 people attended the event, which included music by the Gogebic Range Band, presenting of the check to the Diocese of Marquette and coffee and desserts. City council member Dick Bolen presented a brief history of city hall. The original city hall was dedicated in 1915, exactly 100 years ago, and cost the city $35,000. The... Full story

  • Merit conference focuses on cyber security

In the morning, Jim Lundberg, Merit Upper Peninsula Relations Manager, spoke to local area professions to emphasize the importance of cyber security. While discussing password making for online accounts, Lundberg said passwords are typically challenging to remember. “People are going to write it down and tape it to their computer,” he said.... Full story

    WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Roy Douglas "Buttercup" Lane, 95, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2015. Roy was born on Feb. 9, 1920, in Wakefield, the 10th child of John Charles and Martha (Trevithick) Lane. He attended Wakefield High School and graduated in 1939. Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army under General George Patton in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Dec. 28, 1945.     ASHLAND, Wis. - Francis "Frank" Anthony Grasso, 84, of Pence, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland. Frank was born on Feb. 23, 1931, and grew up at the family home west of Trimble Hill in Montreal. His father, John, passed away when Frank was 7 years of age.     IRONWOOD, Mich. — Leonard W. Korpi, 85, of Ironwood, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at home. He was born May 27, 1930, in Bessemer Township, son of the late Oscar and Anna (Mattson) Korpi, and graduated from A. D. Johnston High School in Bessemer in 1948. He then served four years stateside in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
