HURLEY - More than 50 years ago, a B-47 Stratojet disappeared from radar on a low-level training mission about 10 miles south of Hurley. Three months later, another aircraft disappeared near the same area, a densely wooded place about 3 miles east of U.S. 51. BESSEMER - Bessemer City Council members were updated about this past winter's impact on the region and the emergency situation of Gogebic County at a meeting Monday. "We in Gogebic County declared a local state of emergency," Jim Loeper, emergency manager for Gogebic County said. "The next step we would take as a county is that we would ask the governor to declare Gogebic County a disaster area." IRONWOOD, Mich. - Edward Mason Samson, 78, a longtime resident of Ironwood, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Edward was born on Feb. 13, 1936, in Flint, the son of Percy Edward and Abby Ruth (Warby) Samson. He attended Flint Northern High School and graduated in 1954. BESSEMER, Mich. - Ronald Lee Reil, 62, of Bessemer, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Ron was born in Milwaukee on June 2, 1951, to John and Edith (Jurisch) Reil. He attended Three Lakes high school in Three Lakes, Wis., (class of 1969) before serving in the United States Army in Vietnam and Cambodia. WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Harlan G. Specketer, 87, of Lake Road, Ironwood Township, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield. He was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Bath, Ill., son of the late Julius and Edith (Kolves) Specketer, and graduated from high school in Havana, Ill.
