  • Santa visits Gurney 4-H gathering

    GURNEY, Wis. - Santa Claus made an early visit Saturday to begin the Christmas season at the eighth annual Gurney Gopher 4-H Club's pie social in Gurney. About 20 children, ranging in ages for newborn babies to older kids, were able to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted this holiday. According to club leaders Jessie Bender and Amy Simonar, the event has become popular in Gurney.   • Area merchants join Small Business Saturday

    Local businesses took part in Small Business Saturday, a tradition spreading across the country, annually following Black Friday's focus on large retail shopping. Brambleberry in Ewen, which sells crafting items, fabrics and offers professional quilting, had a couple other vendors to add to their small business spirit.     IRONWOOD - Aspirus Grand View Hospital will host its 24th annual Tree of Love ceremony on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The annual event features two trees, highlighting passed loved ones and celebrations throughout the year.   • Craft fair draws vendors, shoppers to White Pine

Vendors Annette Trail and Theresa Miller said that turnout was pretty good, and displayed a quilt made by the North Country Quilters as well as other raffle items. The quilt is being raffled off with a drawing to be held during Hometown Christmas next weekend in Ontonagon.     IRONWOOD — The Gogebic Community College Samsons held off Hibbing's late 3-point barrage for a 72-66 victory Sunday in the final day of the Lindquist Classic. The Samsons fell to Vermilion 91-78 Saturday night, but stopped a two-game home skid with Sunday's win.     ASHLAND, Wis. — Scott Alan Olson, 44, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Golden Living Center, in Ashland. He was born Nov. 1, 1970, in Ashland, the son of Reuben and Mary (Skenadore) Olson. He worked as a cook at several local area businesses.
