FOLEY, Ala. — Julie FlemingSmith passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Foley, on Sept. 23, 2022. She was born on Dec. 7, 1958. She was a 1977 graduate of Ewen-Trout Creek High School. She played first clarinet in the band and lettered in track four years. She held the high jump record for many years and was voted best musician in her class. BRUCE CROSSING, Mich. - Roy E. Nurmi passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sept. 1, 2022, he was 74. He was born on the family farm in Bruce Crossing on June 8, 1948, to Emil and Mayme Nurmi, the third of five children. He attended Ewen School and joined the U.S. Army in 1968, where he was stationed in Germany. While in the Army, he was an armored vehicle mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1971. GLISSON [email protected] EWEN - Last Saturday, which was the main day of the 45th annual Log Jamboree, drew a lively and consistent crowd throughout hours of activities that included lumber and quilt shows, vendors and games, and plenty of food. It was a day for denim, flannel, boots and braids, with flannel shirts in all sizes - sometimes worn to great effect by entire families. BRUCE CROSSING, Mich. - Stanley Edmund Nurkkala, 88, of Bruce Crossing passed Aug. 22, 2022, at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, after battling a long illness of cancer. Stanley was born Oct. 16, 1933, in Paynesville, to the late George and Mary (Nazback) Nurkkala. He was predeceased by seven brothers and seven sisters. IRONWOOD, Mich. — Our precious Zoe Joyce Ackley was called home on Aug. 9, 2022, at Aspirus Hospital in Ironwood. She was the daughter of Erika and Jonathan McGeshick of Watersmeet. She was a beautiful baby that left us with a lifetime of love. She touched many lives in the short time she was with us. She is survived by her siblings, Jaden, Julian, Jordan and Tyger. MINOCQUA, Wis. - James (Jim) Pietila was born in Flint, Michigan, on Dec. 1, 1935, to Julius and Impie Susan (Stenfors) Pietila. He passed away peacefully on June 8, 2022, at the age of 86 at the Marshfield Medical Center from a massive stroke.
