Jayden Verrett scored twice, on a fumble recovery and an 18-yard run, and Aiden Partanen, Mark Switzer, Cory Aspinwall and Jace Symons also ran in scores. Verrett added his third touchdown in the second...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com CHASSELL — Aubrey Smith has been the one runner preventing Division 1 Houghton from sweeping the top four individual finishes at most of Ironwood’s cross country meets this year. It’s been pretty much the same for the Ewen-Trout Creek girls except the Panthers have been finishing behind both Houghton and Hancock in their first season with a full team. Smith scanned the field at the starting line at Thursday’s BlueBolts Panther Invite and didn’t see any of the Houghton runners. Smith and the Panthers...

By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com BRUCE CROSSING — Jake Witt has made memories the rest of us never will. He heard his name called in the NFL Draft. He was an Indianapolis Colt for a year and a half. He was a pro athlete. And now he’s saying goodbye to football. The offensive tackle from Bruce Crossing didn’t make the Colts’ 53-man roster last week. And the next day, rather than taking one of the offers he received to join a practice squad, he announced his retirement from football, unwilling to risk his health for an uncertain future in...

By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com BESSEMER --- The Gogebic Miners have some experienced seniors at key roster spots. The benefits have been showing up throughout the preseason. Bode Lynott, for instance, gave rides to teammates for summer weightlifting sessions. Coach Nick Heikkila hasn’t had to rehash a lot of things from last year with the veterans picking up where they left off during these August practices. Plus they’re motivated to keep it going once the season kicks off. “It’s nice, we’ve got these seniors, these seniors have goal...

By DAMIIAN LANG news@yourdailyglobe.com ONTONAGON COUNTY - Traditionally, Ontonagon County politely waits until the dust has settled from July 4 celebrations in surrounding communities. Hence, the two communities of Bruce Crossing and Greenland did not celebrate Independence Day until two days later on July 6. Bruce Crossing Let's begin with Bruce Crossing, where it was sunny and warm and where friendly folks were happy to share their thoughts. Gus Pietila was sitting in the shade, looking relax...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com EWEN --- As Jake Witt gets closer to achieving his goals with the Indianapolis Colts, he’s still a Yooper. Last week, the Ewen-Trout Creek graduate helped out at the U.P. Football All-Star Game in Marquette. The day after the game, he fished. The day after that, the same thing. Of course there’s still training to keep up with, the playbook and position skillwork to perfect. But he has another month before the Colts’ grueling training camp starts. Why rush a U.P. summer? “That’s what I’ve been trying to d...

By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com KINGSFORD — The Bessemer boys relay team that’s been winning races all year went into Kingsford pretty much convinced they would win the 4x100 relay and likely break the U.P. record in the process. And they were right. What surprised them was that they went home with two U.P. records. They improved their time by two seconds and set the new standard in the 4x200 relay as well. It was a great day for them and other area athletes at the U.P. track-and-field finals despite a period of wet weather. Tommy Trudg...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com LAKE LINDEN --- The Bessemer Speedboys 4x100 relay team already broke its school record this season and it got an unexpected one here Monday - the best time ever at Lake Linden's Werner Field (45.79 seconds). By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com BESSEMER --- Bessemer’s Tommy Trudgeon put his name in one record book Thursday and he’s hoping to rewrite a couple more before his senior season is finished. His time of 11.60 seconds was the fastest 100-meter dash in the history of Bessemer’s Marcy Bracket Invitational. “It was on my radar,” Trudgeon said. “I still got the school record to beat.” The old record was 11.62 seconds, set by South Shore-Washburn’s Brett Bulovsky in 2014. “It’s awesome, I am so happy for him,” Bessemer coach Valerie Aijala...

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Bessemer boys finished runner-up to host Ashland at the 13-team Welker Invitational Monday. Ashland also won the girls event with Ironwood third and Mercer fourth. Ironwood’s Talon Hughes was fastest in the 100 hurdles. The Speedgirls’ Emily Johnston placed first i...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com IRONWOOD --- The winter’s snow was long gone, a rare feat for Ironwood’s annual Kraemer Invitational track-and-field meet. Also wishing for good weather for the late April meet at Longyear Field may have been asking a bit much, though. The off-and-on rain may not have been pleasant to compete in, but at least they got the oft-canceled meet completed. “That was a tough one,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said. “But the kids did fantastic.” He was impressed with the times the Panthers ‘ runners ended up with...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com BESSEMER - Gogebic's Braylon Lane had been struggling a bit at the plate during Tuesday's game against rival Ironwood with the high pitches especially getting the best of him. But when he had a chance to win the game for the Miners, he came through. His single in the bottom of the fifth inning scored Jordan Libertoski and walked it off as Gogebic beat Ironwood 7-6 in the five-inning contest. "I'd been struggling all day, I had a backwards K earlier in the game. It was rough, but everyone was telling me...

By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Jake Witt is back for his second offseason program, fully healthy and ready to go after a hip injury ended his rookie season before it started. Witt was drafted in the seventh round last April then completed the off-season program and part of training camp before landing on the season-ending injured reserve. That injury is in the rearview mirror, though, and the Ewen-Trout Creek graduate is ready to earn a spot on the roster. Witt was officially cleared during exit...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com MARQUETTE --- Ewen-Trout Creek's Bree Besonen joined a pretty exclusive club last week. The eighth grader was named to the All-U.P. Second Team at the 49th annual Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association girls basketball meeting last week. She's believed to be one of just three girls to ever be named to the All-U.P. team as an eighth grader. She knows the other two pretty well - they're her sisters. Elise Besonen made it in 2017 and...
By JASON JUNO sports@yourdailyglobe.com IRONWOOD --- Ironwood enjoyed success in its stay in Division 4, but their short run in the MHSAA's smallest division will end, at least for now. Their high school enrollment rose from 194 students for the 2023-24 school year to 219, putting them well above the sub-200 student cutoffs for...
