  • Michigan's inaugural wolf hunt not justified

    Feb 1, 2014

To the Editor: Last week Adam Bump, of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, claimed 17 of the 23 wolves killed during last fall’s wolf hunt happened in places within known territories of packs repeatedly attacking livestock or pets and exhibiting fearless behavior around people. Once again, the DNR has stretched the facts. Data released this week in response to a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that no wolves were killed near either of the two farms in the U.P. with the greatest livestock losses to wolves. Most wolves k...

    Pat Krause|Jan 22, 2014

IRONWOOD - In a non-conference game that had the feel of something much bigger, the tall and talented Ironwood Red Devils showed they could rise up in a big game and carved out a 65-58 win over Washburn on Tuesday night. The game generated a lively interest among fans since both teams were undefeated in their divisions of the Indianhead Conference. Washburn was 7-0 in the West Division (10-1 overall) and Ironwood was atop of the East with an 8-0 record (8-1 overall). The Red Devils were also ran...

  • U.P. scoring record ready to move from E-TC to Crystal Falls

    Jason Juno|Jan 10, 2014

At least for a few more hours, Allison (Bailey) Bottoms, a 1997 Ewen-Trout Creek graduate, holds the Upper Peninsula career scoring record. At 2,131 points, Bottoms, a 6-1 center, is one of just three U.P. girls basketball players to have scored more than 2,000 points. Crystal Falls Forest Park's Lexi Gussert will likely pass her tonight - she needs 13 - in the Trojans' home game against Bark River-Harris. She stands at 2,119 points. Gussert, a Michigan State recruit, is a 6-0 do-it-all player f...

  • Red Devils roll over Midgets

    Pat Krause|Dec 31, 2013

HURLEY - Ironwood played well and Hurley did not. It was that simple and it led to Ironwood getting off to a good start early in the new year by downing Hurley 57-46 in an important Indianhead Conference rivalry game on Thursday night. "At times, we looked really good and at times we had some breakdowns," Red Devil coach Pete Lewinski said. "Overall, we did a good job. It seemed like we had a bitter taste from the Ashland game (a 64-37 loss). It was just that we could have given them a better...

    Jason Juno|Dec 20, 2013

After losing to the Speedboys in the first matchup last season, Ironwood overcame terrible shooting in the first quarter and a never-say-die Bessemer team for a 67-56 win Thursday night. "I reminded the boys what Bessemer did to us last year (a 55-51 win) and took us by surprise a little bit," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. • Lakes drown Panthers on home floor

    Jason Juno|Dec 16, 2013

EWEN - Opponents don't often leave Ewen with 34-point victories. But Lake Linden-Hubbell already is playing like the U.P. top-five Little 5 team it was last year and Ewen-Trout Creek is adjusting to an inexperienced team that is playing one of the toughest schedules of anyone in the U.P. Lake Linden won 84-50 on Saturday night. Even the Panthers' JV team went 18-2 last year and the E-TC varsity team hasn't finished under .500 since the 2004-05 season, so nobody was used to playing from that far...

  • Devils surprise Speedgirls in OT

    Pat Krause|Dec 14, 2013

IRONWOOD - It was a game that seemed destined for overtime after it was tied after one quarter, a one-point game at the half, tied at the end of three quarters and tied through much of the fourth quarter. In what will be of thought of as one the most exciting games of the year, Ironwood defeated the Bessemer Speedgirls in overtime 48-44 at the John Krznarich Gym on Friday night. "We knew if we played our best we could beat them," said Ironwood's Jessica Gering, who had a dream night of 24...

  • Miracle miss: Samsons escape with win

    Jason Juno|Dec 12, 2013

IRONWOOD - How did that shot not go in? Mesabi Range's Bacarius Dinkins, who scored a game-high 22 points, managed to get to the rim after his team inbounded it with 2.2 seconds left. His layup to win sure looked good, but it slowly rolled over instead of through. Instead, the Gogebic Community College Samsons survived with a 69-68 victory Wednesday over a good Mesabi team at the Lindquist Center. Home rims? God's a Samsons' fan? Nobody could answer the question: How did that not go in? "I t...

  • More to story of farmer's wolf problems

    Dec 5, 2013

To the Editor: A photo of John Koski walking among cattle bones graced the front page of the Daily Globe Dec. 3 with the caption that he “has the highest number of reported wolf attacks in Michigan.” Although he has lost more livestock to wolves than any other producer, there is far more to the story. Department of Natural Resources records dated Aug. 3, 2012, show at Koski’s Matchwood farm: —The fences are still in horrible need of repair and husbandry practices have not changed. —It is likely carcasses are going unfound each year, violating...

  • Area honors band plays 'impressive' concert

    Nov 27, 2013

To the Editor: I attended the Gogebic Range Honors Band performance on Friday night at the Historic Ironwood Theatre. The students who played were selected by their individual band directors to take part. To say that I was impressed is quite the understatement. Stephen Grugin, an associate professor of music from Northern Michigan University, came to work with the students during the day on an array of music that ran the musical gamut. What the audience listened to was the result of that one day of practice. True, the students did get the music...
