    Aug 19, 2022

By P.J. GLISSON [email protected] IRONWOOD - A fine, lingering drizzle last Saturday threatened the second day of harness racing, but turned out to make it better than ever at the Gogebic County Fair. "The track was really in excellent shape," said Marvin Kauppi, director of harness racing, after races ended. "After the rain, I thought it would be a little greasy." Instead, he said the moisture actually helped the surface, and although the track was dragged after each race, no watering...

  • Bugler makes a statement at racing events

    Aug 19, 2022

By P.J. GLISSON [email protected] IRONWOOD — One of the most striking sights at the Gogebic County Fair was Kenneth Walker of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was the bugler at Friday’s and Saturday’s harness racing events, providing a brief call to post before each race and also singing the national anthem at the start of each day’s races. Walker said he aims at a Kentucky Derby look and was dressed to the nines: white pants, a red vest and jacket and a black bowler hat and boots. The final touch was a patriotic flag tie. Walker, who is also in...

  • Singin' in the rain: The show must go on

    Aug 17, 2022

By P.J. GLISSON [email protected] IRONWOOD - Friday evening rain threatened to shut down a performance by the Dweebs, a northern Midwestern family band that was scheduled to perform on the small stage of the Gogebic County Fairgrounds. Luckily, a little ingenuity and a lotta pluck saved the day and didn't seem to faze the audience that watched and cheered them on from under three nearby canopies. Although the band also had a canopy, it was not adequate to prevent water from dripping onto...
