That comeback was led by Wakefield-Marenisco's Collin Gagnon, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, and Ontonagon's Taylor Beaudry. Gagnon finished with 20 points and Beaudry scored 19. Richard Jenkins|Jun 8, 2016

HURLEY — With the passage of the June 1 filing deadline for candidates running in August’s partisan primary, it appears several county incumbents will be running for re-election unopposed — although a number of candidates have filed to run for Iron County’s district attorney office. According to the Iron County Clerk’s office, Clerk Michael Saari and Register of Deeds Daniel Soine were both the only two file papers in their respective races. With Treasurer Mark Beaupre filing papers saying he didn’t intend to seek re-election, Deputy Trea...

  • Hurley routs Drummond to win Regional title

    Jason Juno|Jun 3, 2016

HURLEY — Hurley waited six years to win another regional title. The Midgets only needed 4.5 innings — in the entire tournament — to break that drought and return to sectionals for the first time since 2010. The Midgets beat Drummond 11-0 in Thursday's WIAA Division 4 regional final. The top-seeded Midgets got a first-round bye and then advanced through the semifinal when No. 5 Washburn forfeited due to a class trip. Hurley then beat No. 2 Drummond, last year's D-4 regional champion, for the third time this season. Drummond had to use its ace p...

    Richard Jenkins|Jun 2, 2016

HURLEY - Hurley's Silver Street looks a bit nicer after the area master gardeners and Hurley third graders planted flowers in the planting barrels along the street Wednesday. The annual event has become a Hurley tradition that has been going on for roughly 16 years. In fact, a number of interns with Iron County's University of Wisconsin Extension office are participating in their second Silver Street planting. "Our summer interns remember doing this (when they were in third grade), so it's...

    Richard Jenkins|Jun 2, 2016

HURLEY — Motorized trail enthusiasts were in Iron County Memorial Day weekend to participate in the county’s 31st annual ATV/UTV weekend rally. While there wasn’t an official count, Hurley Chamber of Commerce marketing and events coordinator Rita Franzoi estimates anywhere from 425 to 450 all-terrain vehicles and utility-task vehicles participated in Friday’s parade. “Businesses were very pleased (with the turnout),” Franzoi said. “(There was) lots of activity.” The parade turnout was down from last year’s numbers, which Franzoi said feat...

  • Midgettes win 1st regional since '11

    Jason Juno|May 28, 2016

HURLEY - It seemed like every ground ball was going just to the left of Hurley shortstop Maria Swartz during the WIAA Division 4 regional final Friday. But with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning, the ball went right to her. She tagged the runner going to third and threw to first baseman Brooke Piilola to complete the 6-3 double play and the 11-7 victory over Gilman. It was Hurley's first regional title since 2011 and 19th in program history. Swartz's double play was an exciting...

  • Rally kicks off with soggy parade

    Ralph Ansami|May 28, 2016

HURLEY - Hurley kicked off its Memorial Day Weekend All-Terrain Vehicle Rally with a 45-minute parade of hundreds of machines in light rain Friday evening. It didn't matter much to the ATV and side-by-side riders, many of whom were soaked in mud from trail riding earlier in the day. Hurley Police Chief Dan Erspamer led the parade down Silver Street for the final time, as he's retiring this summer. The covered side-by-side vehicles probably outnumbered the traditional ATVs on the parade route, wh...

    May 27, 2016

GILE, Wis. — Delores W. Kurta, of Gile, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 13, 2016, after a nearly six-year battle with cancer. Arriving prematurely at home, on Aug. 1, 1930, to William (Buck) Rowe and Rene (Irene/Rena) Rowe of Ironwood, Mich., Delores’ early arrival was riddled with complications. With the family having limited resources, lack of proper medical care and equipment, Delores’ diminutive size, and extremely low birth weight, was viewed as insurmountable, and the local doctor prepared the Rowes for the grim, but inevi...

The students were treated to lightning flashes through the fog and a muddy Lake Superior as they got a lesson in northern Wisconsin weather. The sky brightened later in the day, but not before dumping additional rainfall across the area. The Ironwood weather station off Cloverland Drive recorded 1.6 inches of...
